Full Job Description

Job Summary
NAS is seeking an experienced, student-centered Academic Advisor / School Counselor to join our small charter school community. The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing direct support to students in academic planning, goal setting, and credit tracking. This role guides students in creating personalized education plans, assists with course scheduling and graduation tracking, and connects them to college, career, and community resources.

As a small charter school, we value team members who embrace a team-first mindset and contribute positively to a culture where staff members work collaboratively to meet student needs. This position requires a highly organized, proactive individual who is comfortable wearing multiple hats and serving as a trusted advocate for students and families.

Duties

Academic Guidance & Student Planning

Develop and maintain personalized education plans (PEPs) for each student.
Provide academic advising and graduation planning for students
Monitor credit attainment, transcripts, and progress toward graduation
Coordinate interventions and support services for students at risk of academic failure or disengagement

College, Career & Transition Support

Support college and career readiness, including dual credit, scholarships, FAFSA, and postsecondary planning
Advise students on postsecondary options including college, trade, military, or workforce pathways.
Build partnerships with higher education institutions and community organizations.

Program Support & Compliance

Maintain accurate records in the Student Information System (SIS).
Ensure compliance with state graduation requirements and school policies.
Assist with enrollment, scheduling, and student transition processes
Participate in student support teams, parent conferences, and professional development.
Monitor student progress toward graduation and credit completion.
Support students with course selection, dual credit enrollment, and academic interventions.
Coordinate with teachers, registrar, and administration to ensure proper student placement and scheduling.
Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to contribute beyond assigned responsibilities in a small school setting

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field
Valid New Mexico School Counselor license or ability to obtain licensure
Minimum of three years of experience in academic advising, counseling, or student support services
Knowledge of graduation requirements, transcript analysis, college and career readiness, and student intervention systems
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and families

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field
Spanish language proficiency preferred
Experience in charter schools, alternative schools, or small school settings
Experience supporting multilingual learners and diverse student populations
Experience with dual enrollment, FAFSA, scholarships, and postsecondary planning
