Position: Field Maintenance Technician - Basic
Status: Classified Hourly

Job Summary
Ensures correct flood control operations by performing basic repair and maintenance functions for drainage channels, storm drains, detention ponds, right-of-ways, dams and other SSCAFCA facilities and structures using hand tools, tractors with mower attachments, trucks, trailers, skid steer, and/or track loaders. Activities that will be performed with this equipment may include minor sediment removal and disposal, vegetation removal, debris removal, fence repair, graffiti removal, placement of rock or gravel, and similar tasks.
The essential functions of the Field Maintenance Technician - Basic are:
1. Drives and operates vehicles, including towing loaded trailers, to transport personnel, equipment, and materials to SSCAFCA facilities for maintenance activities.
2. Uses heavy and light equipment to perform erosion control and channel maintenance activities, including pushing dirt, backfilling, compacting soil, and ripping or gouging arroyo, channel, and pond banks to restore proper drainage and structural stability.
3. Safely operates vehicles and equipment on muddy, sandy, dusty, slippery, icy, and unimproved roads and terrain to access maintenance, repair, and construction locations.
4. Conducts pre- and post-operation inspections of vehicles and equipment by checking fluid levels, electrical systems, cables, sheaves, gauges, lubrication, and overall condition to ensure safe and efficient operation; reports deficiencies and maintenance needs.
5. Loads, unloads, carries, and places construction materials, including rock riprap and other aggregate materials, to assist in the construction, repair, and maintenance of channels, outlets, channel linings, and related flood control structures.
6. Assists in the construction, repair, and maintenance of flood control facilities and infrastructure operated by SSCAFCA.
7. Operates soil compaction equipment, including plate compactors, tampers (jumping jacks), and small remote-controlled wheel rollers, to achieve required compaction standards for maintenance and construction projects.
8. Controls and removes vegetation, including trees, brush, weeds, and other invasive growth, from drainage channels, storm drains, detention ponds, dams, rights-of-way, and other SSCAFCA facilities using hand tools, brush hogs, chippers, and small construction equipment.
9. Installs, repairs, and maintains fencing and gates at SSCAFCA facilities to ensure site security and operational integrity.
10. Inspects tools and equipment to ensure proper working condition; identifies and reports defects, damage, or missing components and performs minor repairs and maintenance as directed.
Other Essential Functions Expected of the Position.
1. Maintains accurate records of scheduled and completed maintenance activities, work orders, inspections, equipment usage, and other reports as required.
2. Completes forms, logs, and documentation in accordance with established SSCAFCA policies, procedures, and recordkeeping requirements.
3. Respond promptly to emergency situations, including storm events and infrastructure failures, to minimize damage to private property, public assets, and SSCAFCA facilities.
4. Comply with all applicable safety policies, procedures, and regulations and actively promotes a safe working environment.
5. Assist in ensuring that SSCAFCA-owned and leased vehicles, equipment, tools, and facilities are properly maintained, serviced, and operated in a safe manner.
6. Participates in an on-call rotation and is available to respond to after-hours, weekend, and emergency maintenance situations as required.
7. Maintains regular, reliable, and punctual attendance to support operational and maintenance activities.
8. Complete assigned reports, records, and other required documentation accurately and within established deadlines.
9. Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Job Qualifications
· Qualifications We Require:
· High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
· A minimum of one (1) year of experience in maintenance, construction, equipment operation, public works, flood control, or a related field.
· General knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices associated with field maintenance, construction, and equipment operation activities.
· Ability to perform physically demanding work in outdoor environments and under varying weather and terrain conditions.
· Possession of, and ability to maintain, a valid New Mexico driver's license.
· Demonstrated strong work ethic, dependability, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a diverse team.
· Successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation as a condition of employment.
Qualifications We Prefer:
· Experience providing direction, guidance, and work coordination for maintenance or construction crews.
· Experience in the construction, operation, repair, or maintenance of heavy utility, drainage, flood control, or public works infrastructure projects.
· Working knowledge of the capabilities, limitations, safe operation, and appropriate applications of assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.
· General knowledge of basic construction methods, techniques, materials, and industry practices.
· Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, email, and other software used for recordkeeping and communication.
Tools and Equipment Used
· Operates and utilizes a variety of hand tools and power tools, including chainsaws, tampers, and other equipment commonly used in maintenance, construction, and vegetation management activities.
· Operates vehicles and heavy equipment, including tractors with mowing attachments, skid steer loaders, pickup trucks, and trailers used to transport personnel, equipment, and materials.
· Uses computers, tablets, and related technology to complete work orders, maintain records, access electronic documents, communicate through email, and perform other administrative functions.
Work Environment
This position requires frequent travel to field sites throughout the service area. Employees must be able to drive on both paved and unpaved roads and safely navigate rough, sandy, rocky, uneven, and potentially unstable terrain while performing inspections, maintenance, repair, and construction-related activities. Work is performed outdoors in weather conditions typical of the Sandoval County area, including exposure to heat, cold, wind, precipitation, and other environmental conditions.
Field assignments regularly involve walking and hiking through natural arroyos, drainage channels, detention ponds, dam sites, and other flood control facilities. Employees may be required to inspect and work on steep slopes, embankments, confined areas, underground stormwater facilities, and locations with uneven or precarious footing.
The position may require work in sensitive, hazardous, or potentially dangerous environments where adherence to established safety procedures is essential. Employees are required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety-toe footwear, safety glasses or goggles, gloves, face shields, hearing protection, and other safety equipment as required by the task being performed.
The position also requires the occasional use of ladders and the ability to safely ascend and descend structures, embankments, and facilities located above or below ground level.
