This position is responsible for planning, management, direction, and administration of the forestry trust programs for public domain Native allotments.
Directs, planning, management, and administration of the forestry program. Core elements of this program include timber sales, silviculture, timber appraisals, forest inventories, timber trespass, forest development, integrated forest, and fire management and wildland fire fuels plans, environmental assessments, permits, timber sale money accounts, administrative fee accounts, reports, forest protection (fire, insects, disease), and marketing.
Prepares department budget and monitors budget obligations.
Prepares and executes department policies and operating procedures
Administers timber sale, forest development, forest protection, forest health, agro-forestry, forestry research, and other related contracts, cooperative agreements, or memorandums of understanding or agreements.
Collects, compiles, analyzes, and maintains databases in computerized formats (including GIS), or paper file formats.
Secures land use agreements, rights-of-way, and necessary permits from federal, state, borough, Native organizations, and other private organizations to facilitate harvesting or other related projects.
In the absence of the Fire Manager, the Forester manages the Fire Crewbosses who manage the Yukon Wildland Fire Crew, the Denali Wildland Fire and Fire Fuels Module Crew, and the Forest Project Crew in the performance of assigned duties.
Directs and oversees work assignments for program staff as assigned.
Represents Chugachmiut and the Native allotment forestry interest with local, state, and national organizations.
Represents Chugachmiut as an alternate member to the Alaska Wildland Fire Coordinating Group and member of the Kenai Peninsula All Lands All Hands Working Group and other related fire coordinating or forestry groups.
Obtains and provides direction for other government or private compacts or contracts closely related to the department.
Evaluates and comments on regional and local resource-related issues.
Provides technical assistance to Tribal Councils, Village and Native Regional Corporations.
Performs other duties as assigned or required.
BS degree in forestry or related field, Master’s degree preferred.
5 years of progressively responsible experience related to the work of the position.
Physical Environment:
The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position requires: the ability to sit for a long period of time, a normal range of hearing and eyesight, eye-hand coordination, and manual dexterity to operate office equipment such as computer keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and may be required to lift approximately 30 pounds. Travel to remote locations by boat, snowmobile, ATV, or small plane is required and employee must be willing and able to travel.
Hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with one hour for lunch. Chugachmiut maintains a drug and alcohol and a non-smoking work environment.
