Established in 2011 by NBA Star Jalen Rose and Co-Founder Michael Carter, JRLA is located on the Northwest side of Detroit in the zip code where Jalen grew up. An open enrollment, tuition-free, public charter high school, JRLA provides a leadership-focused education to 420 scholars and nearly 1,000 alumni. The mission is to empower all scholars to develop the strength of character, skills, and knowledge needed to matriculate, be great in, and graduate from college or a postsecondary program so that they have the opportunities to be successful in the competitive world and take care of themselves and the people they love.
Built around a 9-16 model, JRLA has never wavered in its pursuit to improve the educational landscape for Detroit area youth. After 13 years of operations, JRLA remains steadfast in its commitment to not only get scholars to graduate from high school but for them to graduate from college or a postsecondary program as well – outcomes that are real game changers in urban education. The Behavior Interventionist is responsible for working with students who exhibit challenging behaviors, providing individualized interventions, and supporting their social, emotional, and academic growth. This role involves assessing behavioral issues, developing and implementing behavior intervention plans (BIPs), and working closely with teachers, administrators, and families to create a positive and supportive environment for students. The Behavior Interventionist also provides training and guidance to school staff on strategies to manage and prevent challenging behaviors, aiming to improve students’ behavior and overall school experience.
Essential Job Tasks:
- Assess students’ behavioral needs through observation, interviews, and data collection to identify patterns and triggers of challenging behavior.
- Develop and implement individualized Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) based on the assessment of student needs, incorporating positive reinforcement and behavior modification strategies.
- Work one-on-one with students to implement behavior interventions, monitoring progress and adjusting strategies as needed.
- Provide training and support to teachers and staff on effective classroom management techniques, positive behavior reinforcement, and strategies to prevent challenging behaviors.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to ensure consistent implementation of behavior interventions across environments (classroom, home, and school).
- Conduct regular progress reviews and make adjustments to intervention plans to improve student outcomes.
- Provide crisis intervention and support to students in acute behavioral situations, ensuring their safety and the safety of others.
- Document all interventions, progress, and outcomes, maintaining confidential records in compliance with school policies.
- Facilitate group or individual sessions to teach social skills, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution strategies.
- Support the development of a positive school culture by promoting respect, responsibility, and self-regulation among students.
- Work with students who have social-emotional difficulties to help them reintegrate into the classroom and school community.
- Coordinate with school counselors, social workers, and other support staff to address students’ broader social and emotional needs.
- Provide feedback to families and participate in meetings (e.g., IEP, 504 Plan meetings) to discuss behavioral progress and strategies for home support.
- Stay up-to-date on best practices in behavior intervention and contribute to the development of school-wide behavior policies.

Minimum Job Qualifications:
- You believe ALL children can and will succeed regardless of their zip code.
- Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, education, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience working with students in a school setting, particularly with students who have behavioral or emotional challenges.
- Knowledge of behavior management strategies, and behavior modification techniques.
- Strong understanding of child development, social-emotional learning, and special education.
- Experience developing and implementing behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and conducting functional behavior assessments (FBAs).
- Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, and families.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with students, staff, and parents.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality while working with sensitive information.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage challenging behavior in a calm and effective manner.
- Experience working with diverse student populations, including those with special needs, is preferred.
- Ability to work independently and manage a caseload of students.
- Flexibility and adaptability in responding to changing student needs and school environments.
- Certification in crisis intervention techniques (e.g., CPI, NCI) preferred or the ability to obtain certification.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel to off-site locations for home visits and other related tasks.
