Full Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled, patient-focused Doctor of Optometry (OD) to join our high-volume surgical ophthalmology practice. This role is central to delivering exceptional continuity of care — you will serve as a trusted clinical partner to our ophthalmologists by managing pre- and post-operative care for surgical patients while maintaining a robust schedule of comprehensive eye exams for patients across the full spectrum of ocular health needs.

The ideal candidate brings strong clinical acumen, a collaborative spirit, and a genuine commitment to patient education and outcomes. You will work closely with surgeons, ophthalmic technicians, and administrative staff to ensure seamless care delivery in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Operative Care

Perform pre-operative evaluations for cataract, LASIK, PRK, glaucoma, retinal, and other ophthalmic surgical procedures
Conduct comprehensive ocular health assessments including slit lamp examination, tonometry, fundus evaluation, and relevant diagnostic imaging
Calculate and verify IOL biometry measurements and coordinate lens selection in collaboration with the surgical team
Review and reconcile patient medication lists; manage pre-operative drop regimens
Educate patients and families on surgical procedures, expected outcomes, and pre-operative instructions
Identify and document contraindications or comorbidities that may affect surgical planning

Post-Operative Care

Provide post-operative examinations at standard intervals (e.g., 1-day, 1-week, 1-month) following cataract, refractive, glaucoma, and retinal surgeries
Monitor healing, visual acuity, IOP, and anterior/posterior segment findings; escalate concerns to the attending surgeon promptly
Manage post-operative medication regimens and taper schedules
Counsel patients on expected recovery milestones, activity restrictions, and warning signs requiring urgent attention
Document post-operative findings accurately and completely in the EHR

Comprehensive Eye Care

Conduct thorough comprehensive eye exams for patients of all ages, including refraction, contact lens evaluations, and binocular vision assessments
Diagnose and manage common ocular conditions including dry eye disease, glaucoma suspects, diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, and anterior segment pathology
Prescribe corrective lenses, specialty contact lenses, and therapeutic medications within the scope of state licensure
Provide co-management care for patients with systemic conditions impacting ocular health (diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune conditions)
Facilitate appropriate referrals to ophthalmology or other specialists when indicated
Partner with ophthalmologists to ensure consistent, high-quality patient experiences across the surgical care continuum
Participate in case conferences, team huddles, and quality improvement initiatives
Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the EHR (experience with ophthalmology-specific platforms a plus)
Uphold compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and all applicable clinical regulations
Contribute to a positive, respectful, and inclusive practice culture

Qualifications

Required

Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited institution
Current, unrestricted state optometry license (or eligibility for licensure)
Therapeutic pharmaceutical agent (TPA) certification
Strong foundation in anterior and posterior segment examination techniques
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain complex clinical information to patients in plain language
Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) systems

Preferred

1+ year of experience in a surgical ophthalmology, co-management, or high-complexity clinical setting
Familiarity with cataract, refractive, or retinal co-management protocols
Experience with diagnostic instrumentation including OCT, visual field testing, corneal topography, and biometry
Bilingual capabilities are a plus and valued to serve our diverse patient population

Work Environment & Schedule

This is a full-time, in-office position. Standard clinic hours are Monday through Friday, with schedule flexibility based on patient volume and surgical scheduling needs. Some Saturday availability may be required. Occasional cross-coverage between practice locations may be expected. This role does not include on-call obligations.
