REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: DPW Supervision but receives direction from the Master Mechanic.
SUMMARY OF FUNCTION
Under the supervision of the Master Mechanic, performs semi-skilled and skilled work relating to the maintenance and repair of Motor pool vehicles, equipment and facility.
ESSENTIAL TASKS
- Checks and changes oil and oil filters, air and fuel filters, replaces hoses, belts, water pumps, batteries, wiper blades, and similar parts in City vehicles.
- Assists the Master Mechanic in performing moderate to complex overhaul and repair work on engines, transmissions, drive train, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, cooling system, electrical systems, instrumentations and other necessary power equipment.
- Repairs or changes tires, assists with suspension components and brake systems on all City owned vehicles and equipment.
- Assists in maintaining an inventory of all automotive parts, tires, oils and greases, and related items that are in the custody of the municipal garage.
- Assists in maintaining records on all mechanical equipment owned and operated by the City.
- Assists with welding, brazes and fabricates parts for various equipment needs as well as sandblasting and painting.
- Uses a variety of testing equipment such as ammeters, voltmeters, gauges and computer monitoring systems to determine malfunctions and the needed repair.
- Observes and promotes the use and wearing of safety and protective equipment as well as maintain a clean and safe work environment.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Basic computer skills
- Basic mathematical and electrical skills
- Welding and small engine repair skills preferred
- Physical agility
- Ability to work effectively with other employees.
- Graduation from an accredited high school.
- Mechanics coursework from an accredited college
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
- Works in a garage, and is exposed to grease, oil, fumes, chemicals, dust, noxious gases, and physical demands of mechanical work.
- The employee is frequently required to stand, stoop, kneel and crouch.
- Work is occasionally performed outdoors in cold, hot or inclement weather.
SALARY RANGE - This is a part-time position with an hourly rate of $15.00
