Full Job Description

JOB TITLE: Tuttle PE Teacher/Coach

REPORTS TO: Director of the Tuttle School

DIRECTLY SUPERVISES: None

STATUS: Salary, 40 hours/week, Teacher Contract

JOB SUMMARY: PE Teacher/Coach will facilitate the growth of students through direct, multi-sensory instruction utilizing an evidence-based curriculum. The PE Teacher/Coach plans and implements general daily classroom activity, helps students with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities, cares for their physical and emotional health and safety, affirms students' abilities, strives to promote dignity in all relationships, and attends and coaches all Special Olympics sporting events. This position will play a critical role in partnering with the Tuttle School Director and the Interim Head of School.

DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES & ACTIVITIES (Including Physical Function)

Commitment to Briarwood and Tuttle’s mission, purpose, and culture
Strive to inspire a love of the field of study in students.
Partner proactively and enthusiastically with faculty and administration to support students with different learning styles and teachers in their efforts to advance students with different learning needs.
Observe and evaluate individual students displaying academic or behavioral difficulties and assess their learning strengths and challenges.
Maintain a strong content knowledge of softball, basketball, tennis, and other team sports
Prepare and facilitate PE and Fitness classes
Complete all Special Olympics coaching and sport-specific training to assist with the assessment and training of athletes to prepare them for the Special Olympics competition
Maintain flexibility in schedule, other assignment may be needed
Attend Special Olympics sporting events on weekends (10 to 12 weekends in Fall and Spring) and after school (5 to 7 after school in Fall and Spring)
Direct one-on-one or small-group instruction
Prepare lesson plans
Document progress, assist goals for students
Maintain a professional relationship with parents and Special Olympic staff
Developing and issuing educational content including notes, tests, and assignments.
Supervising classes to ensure all students are learning in a safe and productive environment.
Organizing supplies and resources for presentations.
Delivering personalized instruction to each student by encouraging interactive learning.
Planning and implementing educational activities and events.
Ensuring your classroom is clean and orderly.
Update parents
Attending parent-teacher meetings.
Evaluating and documenting students’ progress.
Allocating and grading homework, assignments, and tests.
Work with parents, faculty, and division heads when academic concerns arise regarding students.
Implement a focus on technology use and adoption within the School.
Represent the school at educational conferences and associations.
Participate in any accreditation process for the school.
Attend all staff meetings and staff retreats.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Tuttle School or the Interim Head of School.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree, Teacher Certificate, with a Specialty in Physical Education or Equivalent. CPR certification required.

Experience:

Experience in independent schools, with a strong background in teaching students with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities
Prior Special Olympics experience (preferred)
Work with Intellectual Development Disabilities with various ages and physical abilities
Passion and commitment to providing people with ID with the opportunity to develop as athletes
Exceptionally capable in both written and oral communication
Excellent organizational and presentation skills
Technologically savvy
Proven success at working collaboratively
Passionate about the chosen field of study and working with students who learn differently
