Easily apply by entering your contact information and uploading your resume.Position DescriptionRESPONSIBILITIES:Performs road maintenance duties, including facility, grounds maintenance, minor tool, equipment, and vehicle repair and cab cleaning. Essential function include but are not limited to:
All Levels (Light, Medium, Heavy):
1. Performs routine and emergency road maintenance, which may include snow plowing, salting, grading, patching, ditching, and other tasks as needed.
2. Remains available and able to respond to a variety of weather conditions or emergency situations such as flooding, snowstorms, or road hazards.
3. Performs the following manual labor tasks, but not limited to:
- Digs trenches with shovel to locate utilities. Installs tile lines and catch basins. Places straw matting, silt fences, and other soil erosion control items.
- Shovels and lifts hot or cold patch off of trucks into potholes.
- Serves as part of a crew to install, maintain and repair road signs, delineator posts and buttons, guardrail, right of way fencing, etc.
- Serve as a traffic regulator on road projects or crews.
4. Completes daily pre- and post- inspections and documentation on equipment, vehicles, etc. to ensure proper maintenance, fueling, and safe working order. Troubleshoots and performs minor repairs or general maintenance to resolve technical equipment or job-related issues in the field, informing supervisor of major repairs or concerns.
5. Adheres to safety practices, policies, and traffic regulations while operating equipment, vehicles, etc.
6. Keeps vehicles, equipment, work areas, and buildings clean, orderly, and stored with necessary tools, materials, fluid levels, and supplies. Complies with proper safety protocols and proper tool usage.
7. Maintains accurate logs and reports on equipment and road conditions. May utilize computerized software programs tailored to the department. Records materials, parts, supplies used, time, and equipment expended for each work project.
8. Maintains proper license, endorsements, permits, or regulatory requirements for designated job classification and equipment or vehicle trained to operate.
Other Functions
9. May be assigned as a group “crew” leader overseeing road operations and projects. When assigned this role, serves as the lead for the crew fostering teamwork and professionalism by providing direction, support, mentoring, and clear goals for work activities to other crew members. Promotes a clean, organized, safe, and professional work environment by enforcing protocols and compliance measures on-site. Communicates regularly with the superintendent with any project changes, personnel issues, or on-site disruptions. Documents and gathers project information, completes reports, and shares any other necessary on-site activities that are pertinent to the Superintendent.
10. May be assigned to mentor and assist with on-the-job training for lower-level operators.
Level Dependent (Light, Medium, Heavy):
11. Operates and uses construction and maintenance vehicles, equipment, and tools specific to the designated job classification levels (light, medium, heavy). Once properly trained and authorized, must be able to load, fill, haul material, unload, operate, secure, and transport designated machines. Able to operate controls, valves, levers, hand wheels, throttles, move pedals, and guide machines. Able to calculate material and maintain records as required. Must be able to remove, install, or replace blades and or parts when required. Understands the required maintenance intervals for equipment/vehicles and notifies fleet maintenance accordingly.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Union/Grade Classification: International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324, Job Classifications 1-3. Placement of job classification status will be dependent on work experience, qualifications, and training level.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of one year of college, specialized training or vocational training in road construction, heavy equipment, and/or heavy truck maintenance.
Experience: At a minimum, one year of experience in truck driving and equipment operation. Previous road maintenance or construction experience preferred. Work experience and training level of equipment will be taken into consideration for the placement of designated classification as follows:
- Job Classification 1: Light Duty Operator – requires a minimum of one year of experience in truck driving and equipment operation
- Job Classification 2: Medium Duty Operator – requires a minimum of two to four years of experience operating medium to heavy duty equipment, including successful training on four pieces of equipment within the light duty classification
- Job Classification 3: Heavy Duty Operator – requires a minimum of five years of experience operating heavy duty equipment, including successful training on four pieces of equipment from light and four pieces of equipment from medium duty classifications
At the discretion of the Managing Director, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Other Qualifications: Ability to pass a DOT physical and drug screen. Possession of a valid Michigan Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B required for all operator levels. Class A is required for operator levels 2 (medium) and 3 (heavy). Additionally, required to hold and maintain other license endorsements (e.g., tanker, air brakes, doubles, etc.). All level of operators will be required to pass skills assessments such as traffic regulations, chainsaw, proper PPE, lock-out/tag out, etc. for equipment/tools designated to operate.
Relevant Skills/Specialized Equipment Knowledge:
- Basic computer/tablet knowledge with ability to utilize operations software.
- Safe operation and limitations of various types of light to heavy equipment.
- Basic knowledge of road construction and maintenance procedures.
- Ability to use/operate hand tools, laser level, power tools, specialized tools and equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret job plans or instructions.
- Ability to work independently or assist others.
- Ability to effectively communicate with employees, vendors, and the public tactfully, professionally, and courteously to reflect positively on the department.
