Job Title: Mechanical Designer
Job Description
The Mechanical Designer creates and develops detailed 3D models in SolidWorks with a primary focus on the design and development of chassis systems and components, including chassis cabs. This role collaborates closely with Electrical Designers and shop floor teams to verify fit and function, ensuring that digital designs are accurately translated into high-quality physical builds.
Responsibilities

Create and develop detailed 3D models and assemblies in SolidWorks for chassis systems and components, including chassis cabs.

Design sheet metal parts and assemblies that meet performance, manufacturability, and safety requirements.

Apply GD&T principles to ensure accurate dimensioning, tolerancing, and proper fit and function of components and assemblies.

Collaborate closely with Electrical Designers to coordinate mechanical and electrical interfaces and resolve integration issues.

Work with shop floor personnel to verify that designs are buildable, fit correctly, and function as intended.

Troubleshoot design and build issues by reviewing models, drawings, and physical builds, and implement design improvements as needed.

Create and maintain bills of material (BOM) to support manufacturing and procurement, when required.
Essential Skills

Strong expertise in 3D modeling using SolidWorks.

Experience in sheet metal design for mechanical components and assemblies.

Solid understanding of GD&T for mechanical design.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP) or equivalent SolidWorks proficiency is highly beneficial.

Experience creating and managing bills of material (BOM).

Experience working with air and hydraulic schematics in support of mechanical system design.

Background in heavy truck, transportation, or emergency response vehicle chassis design.
Work Environment
This position is based in an engineering building alongside a team of mechanical and electrical engineers and designers. The role is primarily office-based, working at a cubicle on design tasks in SolidWorks, with regular interaction on the shop floor to review physical builds, verify that designs look correct, and troubleshoot any issues. The project team includes approximately 12 designers, and you will work closely with functional leads and mentors who provide training and guidance on workload and processes. The standard schedule is Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some periods of required overtime on Fridays; overtime is compensated at 1.5 times the regular rate. The work focuses on custom fire apparatus, heavy truck chassis, custom vehicles, and truck bodies, offering exposure to complex, real-world mechanical systems. The assignment includes one week of vacation every six months, as well as six major holidays, supporting a balanced and sustainable work experience.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.
