The State of New Hampshire, Department of Military Affairs and Veterans Services has a full-time vacancy for Cemetery Equipment Operator and Maintenance Worker.
Summary:
Operates heavy equipment to conduct burial and groundskeeping operations at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery (NHSVC). Performs skilled building and vehicle maintenance, landscaping, snow removal, and other tasks required to properly honor veterans, families, and the State of New Hampshire.
YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: Equivalent combination of 3 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in maintenance, building trades, landscaping, operating heavy equipment, automotive repair, or related field.
License/Certification: Valid driver’s license
Other Requirements:
1. Successful completion of a State Police records check
2. Ability to perform actions such as heavy lifting (up to 100 lbs), bending, climbing stairs/ladders, digging with a handheld shovel, and in good physical condition with normal strength and agility
3. Ability and willingness to report to job site or be on standby during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather or building emergencies, as this position is designated as “Essential Personnel”. Overtime in support of snow removal operations is mandatory.
Trainee Option: Candidates with an equivalent combination of 2+ years of relevant education and experience after completion of high school may be considered and hired in 'trainee status' for this position
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Knowledge of the principles of private or public cemetery operations and maintenance
2. Familiar with all National Cemetery Administration inspections standards with respect to graves, headstones, maintenance, and groundskeeping standards
3. Experience in interacting with members of the military, including family members of deceased veterans
4. Appointment consideration shall be given to qualified eligible veterans

Responsibilities:
DETAILED TASKS (STANDARD): None
DETAILED TASKS (AGENCY/POSITION-SPECIFIC):
Operates, maintains, and repairs heavy and light equipment, including an excavator, backhoe, dump truck, loader, skid-steer, riding lawn mower, string-trimmer, and other tools and equipment.
Repairs, maintains, and installs parts and systems on electrical installations and equipment, plumbing systems, heating and air conditioning units, irrigation, mechanical assemblies, and door security devices to improve and maintain the operating conditions of NHSVC facilities.
Coordinates with administrative staff to ensure a dignified, efficient, and accurate placement of remains. Marks each placement with an upright granite headstone or bronze niche marker while maintaining exact precision for Marker Placement and ensuring compliance with all National Cemetery Administration guidelines and safety policies.
Develops and conducts annual, monthly, weekly, and daily plans for care and cleaning of grounds, roads, trees, gardens, buildings, and equipment. Prioritizes and reassesses responsibilities to serve the needs of all events and burials performed on-site while also adhering to a firm maintenance schedule. Communicates with team and supervisor to escalate and resolve urgent needs.
Performs regular maintenance, repairs, and cleaning to keep NHSVC tools, equipment, and vehicles in excellent operating condition.
Performs carpentry, woodworking, metal work, painting, cleaning, and other maintenance on over 50 structures located at the NHSVC.
Reads and interprets blueprints, specifications, job orders, and technical manuals to facilitate construction, repair, and upkeep of buildings, vehicles, equipment, and grounds at the NHSVC. Makes recommendations to supervisor for process and procedure improvements. Maintains knowledge of Veteran Affairs guidelines and regulations to ensure compliance with standards.
Repairs, installs, and repoints brick, concrete and stone structures and appurtenances to maintain the masonry portions of NHSVC facilities and monuments.
Performs snow and ice removal and surface treatment operations to maintain safe road, walkway, and parking lot conditions, utilizing a variety of equipment such as plow trucks, front loaders, and snow blowers. Perform maintenance and repair on snow removal equipment. Remains available for all weather-related tasks during after-hours to maintain safety.
Coordinates with all guests to the Veterans Cemetery to provide instruction and information while ensuring visitor safety and respect for burials and events. Assumes responsibility for coordinating and completing tasks in the absence of the Cemetery Buildings and Grounds Superintendent, to include ordering and receiving repair parts, supplies and units to perform maintenance tasks.
