Job Summary
Responsible for efficient and safe collection of blood samples from patients (Nyack Hospital inpatients and outpatients) for laboratory analysis or other medical purposes. Interacts with medical, nursing and laboratory staff in a professional manner at all times. Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, sharps containers, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, alcohol swabs, and bandages on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests and procedures. Verifies or records identity of patients and converses with patient to allay fear of procedure. Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, cleans puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection device. Withdraws needle, removes tourniquet while applying treatment to puncture area, labels all blood containers for subsequent processing. May prick finger or heel to draw blood. Performs clerical and computer responsibilities as assigned. Assists with "difficult" draws on units.
Essential Functions
- JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES: Demonstrates the required job specific technical/professional knowledge, skills and abilities. * 1. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, ability to explain procedure and put the patient at ease prior to collecting the specimen. 2. Verifies patient information utilizing standard hospital procedure to ensure positive patient identification. 3. Proficient in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary technique from patients of all age groups, infant to elderly, utilizing aseptic technique to obtain blood for laboratory testing. 4. Collects specimens and is responsible for the completion of routine workload in the specimen collection/processing areas according to established hospital and laboratory policies and procedures. 5. Correctly labels the collection container in the presence of the patient with pertinent patient information necessary for identification, and subsequently must complete and file companion paperwork to trace the route of the sample from collection to lab work, final analysis and diagnosis, and finally to proper disposal of fluids. * Document on addendum age specific competency.

Qualifications
- High School Required or
- GED Required
- 1-3 years 1 – 3 years or graduation from phlebotomy training program that provided clinical hours Required
- Possess basic telephone, organizational, and computer skills.
- Flexible in work schedule hours.
- Excellent customer service skills, ability to work with minimal supervision.
Phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency Upon Hire Preferred
