Full Job Description

Overview

The Forestry Impacts Specialist monitors timber harvest activities within the Chehalis Tribe’s Usual and Accustomed (U&A) areas to protect forest ecosystems, fish and wildlife habitats, and cultural resources. This role ensures forest practices comply with regulatory standards and do not negatively affect resources important to the Chehalis Tribal community.

Duties

Evaluate and monitor timber harvest plans and forest practices for potential impacts on fish, wildlife, aquatic systems, riparian habitats, cultural resources and water quality.
Review and provide comments on Forest Practice Applications (FPAs) and Forest Road Management and
Abandonment Plans.
Participate in quarterly Tribal and WA DNR sponsored Timber Fish and Wildlife (TFW) meetings, and annual Forest Practices Compliance Monitoring meetings. Additionally, the position will require participation associated with the Cooperative Monitoring Evaluation and Research (CMER) groups.
Provide detailed information on forest habitat conditions and regulatory compliance to other tribal programs and outside resource entities involved in forestry, habitat protection, and recovery efforts.
Prepare and submit quarterly and annual reports to granting agencies on TFW-related activities and outcomes.
Provide input on the Tribe’s forest management plans and processes.
Conduct forest habitat monitoring and other activities to document habitat conditions on Chehalis Tribal lands.
Provide input on watershed restoration projects to ensure TFW related resources are protected.

Skills

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific reports and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information to small groups and respond to questions from technical personnel from outside agencies.
Mathematical Skills: Proficient in basic arithmetic and interpreting graphs and charts for data analysis. Use of basic statistics to analyze habitat data.
Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office and specialized databases; able to learn new software quickly with minimal errors. GIS skills are preferred. Skilled in operating common office equipment, including computers, printers, copiers, and telephones.
Reasoning Ability: Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify problems, gather and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Excellent time management and organizational abilities with a strong attention to detail.
Physical Demands: Able to frequently walk long distances, often up steep slopes, while collecting habitat information. Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment: This position will be a mix of office and field work, with much of the work taking place in forest lands. Duties will include regular work in the outdoor work environment in forest and river habitats. Work will require walking, climbing and navigating over uneven terrain and bodies of water such as rivers, lakes and streams, often in inclement weather conditions.
