Performs non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity, using operational precedents which are not fully applicable. Such assignments, which are typically parts of broader assignments, are screened to eliminate unusual design problems. May also plan such assignments. Receives technical advice from supervisor or engineer; work is reviewed for technical adequacy (or conformity with instructions). May be assisted by lower level technicians and have frequent contact with professionals and others within the establishment.
Typical duties and responsibilities: Performs one or a combination of such typical duties
as:
1. Develops or reviews designs by extracting and analyzing a variety of engineering data. Applies conventional engineering practices to develop, prepare, or recommend schematics, designs, specifications, electrical drawings, and parts lists. Examples of designs include:
a. Detailed circuit diagrams;
b. Hardware fittings or test equipment involving a variety of mechanisms;
c. Conventional piping systems; and
d. Building site layouts.
2. Conducts tests or experiments requiring selection and adaptation or modification of a wide variety of critical test equipment and test procedures; sets up and operates equipment; records data, measures and records problems of significant complexity that sometimes require resolution at a higher level; and analyzes data and prepares test reports.
3. Applies methods outlined by others to limited segments of research and development projects; constructs experimental or prototype models to meet engineering requirements; conducts tests or experiments and redesigns as necessary; and records and evaluates data and reports findings.
Under the supervision of the Quality Assurance and Safety Officer and guidance from the Machine Shop Manager, inspects incoming parts and supplies, performs first article, in-process, and final inspection; performs inspection of setups and fixtures; maintains, or schedules maintenance of testing tools; monitors inspection schedules and follow-up for compliance of inspection requirements and AS9100 quality management systems practices.
Expected to read and analyze drawing packages, quality documents and manuals, and to verify measurements and other specifications to plans in accordance with requirements and possess a basic knowledge of mechanical systems (e.g., Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing [GD&T] principles and practices), critical thinking skills, and proficiency with standard testing tools, calipers, micrometers, depth gauge, optical comparators, and CMM equipment and software. Data shall be entered in SharePoint tools related to tasking (e.g., inspection logs, discrepancy/failure databases).
Essential Functions
1. Inspect first articles, in-process parts, and products prior to shipment using gauges, coordinate measuring machine, optical comparators, and vision.
2. Generate spreadsheets for data collection.
3. Generate first article inspection reports
4. Reconcile final inspection documentation for shipments.
5. Test incoming raw materials.
6. Use precision measuring instruments including micrometers and calipers, and fixtures and gauges to check work and perform detailed inspection of parts produced.
7. Read Instrumentation and gauges to accurately measure dimensions on parts being machined within specified tolerance.
8. Wear proper safety equipment and comply with company safety rules at all times.
Adequate experience performing the duties of the labor category as described in the Department of Labor functional description.
At least four (4) years of practical experience, to include laboratory testing, manufacturing, or maintenance.
Experience may include technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems.

Required Education and Experience
1. High school diploma or GED.
2. Minimum of two years’ experience as a quality inspector.
3. Ability to read and interpret complicated engineering drawings.
4. Able to understand the commonly used standards, codes, and industry practices.
5. Training in general safety awareness and practices.
6. Working knowledge of standard testing tools using calipers & micrometers, depth gauges, optical comparators, and CMM.
7. Ability to fluently read and write English, comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions.
8. Intermediate to advanced shop math.
9. Proficient using a PC in a Windows environment.
10. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, in particular Microsoft Excel.
Preferred Education and Experience
1. Associate’s degree in a technical field.
2. Quality system awareness.
3. Experience with the properties of common plastics used in manufacturing.
4. Knowledge of AS9100 is a plus.
Salary: the expected Salary for this position is $65,790 to $99,840 but is subject to change.
