Tetra Tech is looking for a Geoscientist to provide mid-level technical support and project management for environmental investigation and remediation projects and proposals, primarily in the areas related to geology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, remediation, field data collection, contaminant fate and transport, and data interpretation/presentation. Capable of assuming responsibility for routine to complex tasks/projects. Provide technical guidance to lower-level geosciences staff. Experience in groundwater modeling, conceptual site model development, and leading field crews is desirable. Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in a geosciences field required. A Master’s degree (MS/MA) and/or hydrogeology-related academic experience preferred;
- 3-6 years directly related professional experience and/or training in environmental geosciences-related work (advanced degree may serve as 1 year of experience).
- Experience with Phase I/II site assessments desirable.
- Basic computer use skills required, advanced skills desirable.
- Experience with analytical and finite-difference groundwater modeling on various GUIs desirable as well as GIS background to support pre- and post-data processing.
- Experience with evaluations of complex spatial and temporal data sets desirable.

Sampling of various media – Sampling work may include lifting, maneuvering, positioning, and operating sampling/testing equipment (pumps, hoses, power cables, hand augers, sampling tools, etc.). Any physical activities required to facilitate operation of field equipment and collecting samples is required, as is movement over rough terrain. Moving earth via shovels or hand augers, or removing vegetation may be required at times to gain access to sampling locations.
Investigation-derived waste (IDW) management – Empty and full IDW containers (mostly 55-gallon drums) must also be managed (moved, emptied, etc.), typically via drum dollies or supervising subcontractors performing drum staging. Walking on uneven and undeveloped ground is required. Hauling and emptying 5-gallon buckets of purge/development water may be required.
Typical field activities also include the lifting of pumps, cases containing equipment, sample coolers and other items commonly weighing between 1 to 50 pounds. Occasionally, staff members may be required to participate with others in lifting generators or other heavier objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds. Field staff must be physically able to work in adverse weather conditions, such as extreme heat and cold, and precipitation.

Project work will entail a mix of office and field work. Office work will be in a typical office environment with controlled conditions. Field work will entail work in a wide range of outdoor conditions, including work in adverse weather conditions, such as high heat, extreme cold, and precipitation and on unimproved job sites where dense vegetation, uneven ground, and physical obstacles may be present. Project worksites will typically be within the eastern United States, but may include travel to/work at sites across the USA and internationally. Field project durations may range from one day to several months.
Language & Communication Skills:
Ability to read, research, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical documents and procedures, and government regulations. Ability to write detailed reports, business correspondence, and procedures suitable for client submittal. Ability to effectively present information, communicate, and respond to questions from groups of coworkers, clients, customers, and the general public. Effective communication skills, both orally and in written form. Must be fluent in the English language – reading, writing, and speaking.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of algebra, solid and plane geometry, and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Strong background in mathematics and its application to quantitative analysis/problem solving a plus.
Other Skills:
Ability to evaluate basic and complex issues, solve practical problems, and deal with a variety of concrete and abstract variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret and follow a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Strong technical, writing, and verbal communication skills required. General computer, word processing, and spreadsheet capabilities are required, along with experience with using Microsoft Office applications (WORD, PowerPoint, EXCEL, etc.). Knowledge/experience in computer-based, geosciences-related, graphics software, data evaluation software (Aqtesolve, AquiferTest Pro, etc.), and electronic field data collection. Groundwater flow/contaminant transport modeling (BioChlor, AT123D, MODFLOW via GUIs such as Groundwater Vistas, GMS, Visual MODFLOW, etc.) is desirable.
