Position Summary:
Reporting to the Chief Curator, and in partnership with the Curatorial team, Education, Collections other museum departments, the Exhibitions Manager oversees the planning, installation, and management of special exhibitions and collection-based installations.
Primary Functions and Major Responsibilities:
· Exhibition Management:
· Implement schedules for all exhibitions in accordance with the museum’s exhibition milestone process for timely completion, and regularly check adherence to deadlines.
· Use project management best practices, such as detailed project schedules, budgets, and communication platforms.
· Collate exhibition-related text for wall labels, panels, credit lines, and other printed exhibition support materials for external translation and design.
· Develop and manage exhibition maintenance schedules, including training staff in cleaning and maintenance of exhibition cases and any special components/interactives.
· Ensure objects checklists are up to date and complete. Coordinate with the Collections department to ensure objects are cleared for display following the museum’s collection management policy.
· Order and stock installation, printing, and packing supplies.
· Exhibition Development:
· Assist in the development of exhibition themes and narratives.
· Work with exhibition curators to design floor plans exhibition layouts.
· Coordinate meetings without external graphic designers and assist in the development of interpretive material.
· Exhibition Installation:
· Lead museum Preparators in preparing objects for display including case layouts, mount fabrication or purchasing of needed equipment. This may include object handling, digital media installation, painting walls and cases, as well as light carpentry work.
· Coordinate the gallery and casework construction and painting schedules.
· Oversee and coordinate the production and installation of graphic and interpretive material.
· Oversee lighting of the galleries and ordering of replacement fixtures as needed.
· Budget:
· Work directly with the Chief Curator to prepare annual and multiyear budget and goals for the Exhibitions department.
· Lead the development of all individual exhibition budgets and keep projects on schedule and within budget. Monitor actuals versus budgets to ensure that expenses stay within budget, and flag overages on a timely basis. Work closely with Finance to ensure budgets stay accurate and current.
· Staff Oversight:
· Supervise Preparators in the install and deinstall of long term and temporary exhibitions. Hire and train additional preparators as necessary.
· This position assumes staff and contractor oversight roles during installation and deinstallation of exhibitions and exhibition maintenance.
· Professional Growth:
· Regularly participate in professional development opportunities.
· Be prepared to give oral reports and departmental updates.
· Serve on institutional committees and participate in other culturally related community organizations as appropriate and needed.
Qualifications:
· 3 years of experience working in exhibition development/ management or collection related roles as an employee or volunteer.
· Bachelor’s degree in a field related to the museum mission. Work and volunteer experiences can be substituted for an academic degree with a demonstratable knowledge of museum best practices and exhibition management.
· Proficient computer skills including the use of contemporary technology in a museum setting. Working knowledge of Sketchup, Past Perfect, and Adobe Creative Suite preferred. Adaptability to new computer systems and digital technologies as they evolve with time.
· Ability to work effectively under minimal supervision and in a team-oriented environment.
· Must be able to communicate professionally orally and in writing with museum staff, and the public.
· Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed including occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.
· Candidate must maintain a current driver’s license, personal automobile insurance, and a safe driving record.
· Must be able to work and/or type at a desk, climb stairs, climb ladders, and lift up to 30 pounds.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience with light carpentry and painting.
· Spanish Language proficiency.
· Fluency in any other language.

Compensation, Benefits and Perks
This position’s pay range is $50,000-$60,000 per year; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. This position offers health insurance, dental and vision plans, paid time off, employer contribution to 403(b) and life insurance. The position includes access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), museum membership and 11 paid holidays per year (holidays may shift annually due to where days fall within calendar).
