Full Job Description

As a member of the leadership team, the Equine Services Director is responsible for the management of all aspects of barn management. The ESD works in close cooperation with the other departments to ensure mutual support, effective communications, and smooth delivery of services and operational success. Primary duties include: 1) People management while maintaining cooperative relationships with all stakeholders; 2) Care of a 30+ member herd; and 3) Management of the department budget.

Scope of Role:
Specific activities include, but are not limited to:

Herd Management

Understanding of and adherence to Little Bit’s “Equine Standards of Care.” Ref - https://www.littlebit.org/equinestandards
Ongoing evaluation and revision of herd composition to support programming needs (horse acquisition/retirement).
Facilitate Horse Council and leading members to successfully fulfill its charter.
Ensure smooth daily operations, such as stall cleaning, nutrition, turn out, blanketing, schooling and equine vendor management.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of the equine department.
Manage rehabilitation and dispensing & application of prescribed medications and treatments.
Manage animal emergencies in a clear, calm, and decisive manner, often after normal business hours.
Ensure equine facilities are clean and safe for horses and humans and partnering with Facilities and the Volunteer departments as needed.

People Management

Responsible for the management of equine staff and volunteers, which includes barn team, schooling team and contractors.
Foster positive relationships with all stakeholders in the care and training of program horses and horse behavior issues.
Little Bit is a matrixed organization requiring cross-departmental coordination of staff.

Fiscal Management

Creation and adherence to the Equine Department budget of approximately $900k.

Desired Qualifications

Minimum of 7+ years of related experience in equine operation of a similar scope.
Comfortable working with vulnerable populations.
Experience with Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Excel is required.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Able to recognize and address early signs of equine lameness or muscle soreness, and signs of distress, such as colic, dehydration, etc., and taking appropriate action.
Experience with body clipping and transporting horses.
Able to communicate positively and effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others.
Experience with Salesforce or similar CRM is highly desirable.
U.S. citizen or valid resident/work permit. Sponsorship is unavailable.
Valid driver’s license.
Must pass a Criminal History background check.

Working Conditions/Physical Effort

Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
Work includes stooping, kneeling, bending, twisting, lifting hands and equipment over head, reaching, pushing and pulling.
Involves exposure to year-round weather conditions in a dusty environment.
May walk several miles per day over uneven surfaces.
Perform desk work at a computer.
Must have reliable transport to be onsite, including in adverse weather.
Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends.
Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Pay: $81,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
