Mechanic / Driver
Position Summary
The Mechanic/Driver is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, maintenance, testing, and transportation of industrial electrical and mechanical equipment. This position supports shop and field service operations by ensuring equipment is repaired to company and manufacturer standards while providing safe, timely transportation of equipment between company facilities, vendors, and customer locations.
The Mechanic/Driver operates company vehicles and material handling equipment, performs mechanical repairs, assists with equipment installation and removal, and represents Independent Electric Machinery Company professionally when interacting with customers. This position plays a critical role in delivering quality workmanship, maintaining a safe work environment, and supporting the company's commitment to exceptional customer service.
Reporting Relationship
The Mechanic/Driver reports directly to the Shop Foreman or other designated supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Diagnose mechanical and electromechanical equipment to determine repair requirements.
- Inspect equipment and identify worn or damaged components requiring replacement.
- Repair, rebuild, or replace parts and assemblies in accordance with company procedures and manufacturer specifications.
- Disassemble, clean, inspect, and reassemble equipment using proper tools and techniques.
- Perform operational testing to verify proper performance and reliability following repairs.
- Prepare completed equipment for delivery by cleaning, painting, labeling, and documenting repairs as required.
- Safely operate company trucks, forklifts, overhead cranes, scissor lifts, and other material handling equipment after receiving appropriate training.
- Transport equipment, parts, and materials between company facilities, vendors, and customer locations while complying with all traffic laws and company safety policies.
- Conduct routine inspections of assigned company vehicles and promptly report maintenance or safety concerns.
- Complete work orders, inspection reports, delivery documentation, time records, and other required paperwork accurately and legibly.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with company safety standards.
- Follow all OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and applicable industry standards.
- Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices at all times.
- Communicate professionally and courteously with customers, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Participate in required safety meetings, technical training, and continuing education programs.
- Assist with other shop, field service, or transportation duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical equipment, motors, controls, and industrial machinery.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems using appropriate testing equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, service manuals, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, and diagnostic equipment.
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous mechanical repair, industrial maintenance, or equipment service experience preferred.
- Experience operating commercial vehicles or transporting industrial equipment is preferred.
- Basic computer skills for documentation and work order completion are a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 50 pounds; heavier items may require assistance or lifting equipment.
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, climb, crawl, and reach throughout the workday.
- Safely operate tools, machinery, vehicles, and material handling equipment.
- Work in both shop and outdoor environments, including exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, grease, and vibration.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, steel-toe footwear, and other PPE as required.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate (Medical Card) if required for assigned vehicle operation.
- Forklift and aerial lift certifications are preferred or must be obtained after hire if required.
Work Environment
This position works in both industrial shop and field environments. Employees may be exposed to moving mechanical equipment, electrical hazards, loud noise, dust, oils, chemicals, and varying temperatures. Safe work practices and compliance with all company safety policies are essential.
