Full Job Description

I. Position Summary

The Elementary (1st to 4th grade) Assistant Teacher supports two Lead Teachers in providing a safe, inclusive, organized, and academically supportive learning environment for students in 1st through 5th grade. The Assistant Teacher contributes to the implementation of classroom instruction and daily routines consistent with the mission and Quaker values of State College Friends School, and helps support students’ social, emotional, physical, and academic growth.

This role helps ensure smooth classroom operations, supports differentiated learning experiences, and may substitute for a Lead Teacher when needed.

II. Key Responsibilities and Essential Duties

A. Classroom & Instructional Support

Assist the Lead Teachers in carrying out daily instruction, classroom routines, and transitions
Support small-group and one-to-one work in reading, writing, math, inquiry, and other classroom activities
Prepare, organize, and maintain classroom materials and learning spaces
Help maintain a classroom environment that is orderly, welcoming, and conducive to learning
Reinforce classroom expectations and routines consistently

B. Student Supervision & Support

Supervise students during transitions, recess, lunch, dismissal, field trips, and other assigned parts of the school day
Support students in developing independence, self-regulation, problem-solving, and respectful behavior
Help maintain student safety across classroom and campus settings
Respond calmly and appropriately to routine behavioral, emotional, and social needs

C. Collaboration & Communication

Work cooperatively with Lead Teachers, the Head of School, the Student Support Coordinator, and other staff
Observe and communicate student progress, behavior, and concerns to the Lead Teacher and administration as appropriate
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in communications with families and colleagues
Participate in meetings, training, and other school planning or professional work as assigned

D. Substitution & Flexibility

Provide classroom coverage when needed
Serve as substitute Lead Teacher when needed, including taking on classroom supervision, instructional delivery, and classroom management within the scope directed by the school
Support other elementary classrooms or school functions as assigned

III. QualificationsRequired Education & Experience

High school diploma or GED (minimum).
Experience working with school-age children in a school, camp, childcare, tutoring, or similar setting
Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and respond well to direction and feedback
Clearance on required background checks (Pennsylvania child abuse, criminal history, FBI fingerprinting, and other mandated clearances).

Preferred Education & Experience

Associate’s degree (or higher) in Early Childhood Education or related field.
Experience in a Quaker school or independent school setting.
Experience supporting students with varied academic, behavioral, or social-emotional needs
CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
Prior experience as substitute teacher or assistant teacher with leadership duties.

V. Working Conditions and Schedule

Full-time during the academic year
On-site presence required during school hours, with possible additional time for meetings, in-service days, training, or school events
Physical demands include standing, walking, bending, lifting classroom materials, and supervising indoor and outdoor student activities
Classroom and school environments may be active, noisy, and require multitasking across varied student needs
Assistant Teachers follow the schedule established by their Lead Teacher(s) and the Head of School and may be asked to participate in additional school activities or meetings as needed.

Pay: $21,960.00 - $25,391.00 per year
