Apparatus Operator / EMT – Fire Company (Full-Time, Part-Time & Per-Diem)
Employment Opportunity: Apparatus Operator / Emergency Medical Technician
- The Big Flats Fire Company invites applications from highly qualified, motivated individuals for the position of Apparatus Operator (AO) / Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Since 1948, the Big Flats Fire Company has proudly served the Town of Big Flats and its surrounding communities, and we continue to seek dedicated individuals of the highest character to carry that tradition of service forward. All applicants will apply through this single posting and will be entered into a unified applicant pool. Within the application, candidates must indicate their preferred employment status, Full-Time, Part-Time, or Per-Diem, as described below. The successful candidates will join a dynamic, fast-paced organization and will be entrusted with the delivery of basic life support and first aid to patients in emergency medical situations, as well as the operation of fire apparatus in response to emergency alarms.
Employment Status Options
(Applicants must indicate their preferred status at the time of application.)
- ☐ Full-Time: Forty-eight (48) hours per week, scheduled in 24-hour shifts.
- ☐ Part-Time: Twenty-four (24) hours per week, scheduled in 24-hour shifts.
- ☐ Per-Diem: Engaged on an as-needed basis to fill shifts arising from vacancies, absences, or operational requirements. No minimum number of hours or shifts is guaranteed.
Note: Indicating a preference does not guarantee placement in that category. Assignment is subject to organizational need and may be discussed further during the interview process. Applicants are welcome to indicate more than one acceptable status.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Candidates must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age and possess relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated ability to perform general maintenance duties.
- Proficiency in the use and upkeep of rescue equipment.
- Active Interior Firefighter status with a New York State Fire Department is required.
- Candidates must possess and maintain, as a condition of employment, an active New York State EMT, or Paramedic certification operating at the basic level. Failure to obtain, maintain, renew, or otherwise remain in good standing with the required certification at any time during employment may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
- Active CPR/AED certification is required upon hire. The Company will provide annual CPR/AED recertification training to all employees.
- NYS certification in Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC), Pump Operations, and Aerial Operations must be obtained within one (1) year of hire, or at the next available course offering, at the discretion of the Employer. Preference will be given to candidates who already hold these certifications.
- Candidates must successfully complete a Fire District physical examination, drug screening, and background investigation.
- Employees may be subject to random drug testing.
- Willingness to respond promptly to emergency calls and requests for personnel is required.
- A valid New York State Driver’s License with a clean driving record must be obtained and maintained throughout employment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of pump operations, ladder deployment, and fire equipment is expected.
- Availability for 24-hour shifts, including holidays, weekends, and mandatory overtime, is required.
All expectations outlined herein are subject to modification at the discretion of the Driver Committee.

Compensation and Benefits
- This position offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $16.00 to $28.00, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Probationary Period and At-Will Employment
- All newly hired AO/EMT personnel shall be subject to a ninety (90) working day probationary period, during which performance, conduct, and fitness for continued employment will be formally evaluated. Both the Big Flats Fire Company and the employee retain the right to terminate the employment relationship at any time, with or without cause, in accordance with the at-will employment provisions of New York State labor law.
