Full Job Description

The firm is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Paralegal to support attorneys across multiple practice areas, including but not limited to litigation, family law, real estate, estate planning/probate, corporate/business law, and personal injury. The paralegal will work under the direct supervision of a licensed South Carolina attorney and assist in all phases of case and matter management, from intake through resolution or closing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Draft, proofread, and format legal documents, including pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, contracts, deeds, wills, trusts, and correspondence
Conduct legal research using Westlaw, LexisNexis, or similar platforms and summarize findings for attorney review
Organize, index, and maintain case files (physical and electronic), including document management systems
Prepare exhibits, trial notebooks, and demonstrative materials for hearings, depositions, and trial
Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, court personnel, and third parties under attorney direction
Calendar deadlines, court dates, and statutes of limitations; monitor case timelines
Assist with e-filing in South Carolina state courts (SCJB) and/or federal courts (PACER/CM-ECF)
Coordinate scheduling of depositions, mediations, hearings, and closings
Conduct client intake interviews and gather background information/documentation
Support probate filings and estate administration matters with the Probate Court
Maintain compliance with South Carolina Rules of Professional Conduct regarding the unauthorized practice of law (paralegals may not give legal advice, set fees, or represent clients in court)
Perform other duties as assigned by supervising attorneys

Qualifications

Associate's degree or Certificate in Paralegal Studies (ABA-approved program preferred); Bachelor's degree a plus
2+ years of paralegal experience preferred (entry-level candidates with strong internships may be considered)
South Carolina Certified Paralegal (SCCP) designation through the SC Bar Paralegal Division, or willingness to obtain, preferred but not required
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and legal practice management software (e.g., Clio, MyCase, NetDocuments)
Familiarity with South Carolina Rules of Civil Procedure and local court rules
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines
High degree of discretion and confidentiality
Notary Public commission in South Carolina preferred or willingness to obtain

Preferred Skills

Experience with e-filing systems for SC state and/or federal courts
Familiarity with SC-specific forms and procedures (family court, probate court, magistrate court)
