Freight Broker Agent — Independent Contractor
Company: Great Logistics LLC
Location: Cleveland, Ohio
Position Type: Independent Contractor / 1099
Compensation: Commission-Based
Industry: Transportation, Logistics and Freight Brokerage
About Great Logistics
Great Logistics LLC is a growing, Cleveland-based freight brokerage providing transportation and logistics solutions throughout the United States and North America.
Our services include truckload, less-than-truckload, refrigerated, flatbed, drayage, expedited transportation, warehousing, final-mile delivery, and specialized freight solutions.
We are seeking experienced Freight Broker Agents and logistics professionals who want to grow their business while working with an established brokerage, experienced operational support, modern technology, and dependable carrier resources.
The Opportunity
As a Freight Broker Agent with Great Logistics, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining customer relationships, quoting freight, sourcing and vetting carriers, negotiating rates, and managing shipments from pickup through final delivery.
This is a commission-based independent contractor opportunity for motivated logistics professionals who are comfortable managing customer accounts, building carrier relationships, and taking ownership of their shipments.
Candidates are strongly encouraged to bring an existing book of business or established customer relationships. However, candidates without a book of business may still be considered based on their freight brokerage experience, industry knowledge, and ability to develop new business.
Compensation Structure
- 20% commission based on Great Logistics’ retained commission or profit for assigned or existing business.
- 30% commission on qualifying dormant or reactivated accounts, subject to Great Logistics’ written approval.
- 50%–80% commission for experienced Freight Broker Agents who bring an established book of business.
The final commission percentage for an agent bringing a book of business will be based on factors including:
- Annual revenue and shipment volume.
- Gross profit and profit margins.
- Account quality and customer creditworthiness.
- Customer payment history.
- Operational and administrative support requirements.
- Number and complexity of shipments being managed.
All commission percentages are calculated based on Great Logistics’ retained commission or gross profit unless otherwise stated in the independent contractor agreement. Final compensation terms, revenue thresholds, payment timing, and account ownership will be documented in writing.
Responsibilities
- Develop new customer relationships and freight opportunities.
- Manage and expand assigned, existing, or agent-provided customer accounts.
- Quote truckload, less-than-truckload, expedited, drayage, refrigerated, flatbed, and specialized freight.
- Source, negotiate with, and dispatch qualified motor carriers.
- Properly vet every carrier before dispatching a shipment.
- Use industry-specific carrier-vetting and fraud-prevention software to verify carrier authority, insurance, safety history, identity, operating history, and risk indicators.
- Recognize warning signs involving identity theft, double brokering, cargo theft, fraudulent insurance, unauthorized dispatch services, and compromised carrier email accounts.
- Follow all Great Logistics carrier-qualification, cargo-security, and fraud-prevention procedures.
- Build and maintain shipments within the company’s transportation management system.
- Track and trace shipments from pickup through final delivery.
- Provide customers with timely and professional shipment updates.
- Obtain required documents, including bills of lading, proofs of delivery, cargo photographs, and tracking confirmations.
- Resolve service issues, delays, missed appointments, and carrier-related problems.
- Maintain accurate shipment notes, pricing, documentation, and customer information.
- Follow all Great Logistics customer-service, compliance, and operational expectations.
Carrier-Vetting Experience
Candidates must understand how to properly vet carriers using transportation-industry software and databases.
Candidates should have experience reviewing information such as:

- Insurance coverage and policy status.
- Carrier safety information.
- Length of operating history.
- Inspection and roadside activity.
- Contact-information changes.
- Fraud warnings and reported incidents.
- Carrier identity and ownership information.
- Dispatch-service involvement.
- Cargo-theft and double-brokering risk indicators.
Experience with platforms such as Highway, Carrier411, FMCSA systems, transportation management systems, load boards, shipment-tracking platforms, or comparable industry software is strongly preferred.
Carrier selection based solely on the lowest available rate will not meet Great Logistics’ operational or compliance expectations.
Qualifications
- Previous freight brokerage, transportation, carrier sales, dispatch, or logistics experience.
- Understanding of truckload freight, carrier pricing, and transportation markets.
- Experience negotiating rates with customers and motor carriers.
- Demonstrated knowledge of carrier vetting and freight-fraud prevention.
- Ability to use industry-specific carrier-vetting software confidently.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple active shipments and customer requests.
- Understanding of cargo security, double-brokering risks, and identity-verification procedures.
- Comfortable working with transportation management systems, load boards, email, phone systems, and shipment-tracking technology.
- Ability to work independently while following company procedures.
- An existing book of business or established customer relationships are strongly encouraged.
Existing Contractual Restrictions
Before onboarding, candidates will be required to disclose any current or previous agreements that may affect their ability to perform services for Great Logistics.
Great Logistics will confirm that the candidate is not subject to an enforceable noncompetition, nonsolicitation, confidentiality, customer-ownership, or similar contractual restriction that would prevent the candidate from:
- Working with Great Logistics.
- Bringing or servicing specific customer accounts.
- Contacting former customers or prospects.
- Using customer or pricing information.
- Performing freight brokerage or logistics services.
Candidates must not bring confidential information, proprietary pricing, customer lists, trade secrets, or other protected materials belonging to a current or former employer, brokerage, agency, or business partner.
