Full Job Description

Position Summary:

The Sr. Director of Finance is responsible for the overall management of the organization's accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting and grant support, audit coordination, and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The Controller ensures the integrity of the organization's financial information while supporting strategic decision-making and maintaining compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities:

Financial Management

Direct and oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and cash management.
Oversee the integration, optimization, and effective use of financial systems and technology, including QuickBooks, Bill.Com, and other accounting and financial management platforms.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records using QuickBooks and Microsoft Suite.
Manage budgeting processes, working closely with department heads to develop and monitor budgets.
Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
Maintain the chart of accounts and accounting policies.
Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
Perform monthly account reconciliations and oversee month-end and year-end closing processes.
Monitor organizational cash flow and recommend strategies to maintain financial stability.
Prepare financial reports for the Finance Committee and Board of Directors. Attend Financial Committee and Board meetings.
Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to ensure sound Fiscal management.

Strategic Collaboration

Collaborate with executive leadership to develop long-term financial strategies aligned with the organization's mission and goals.
Lead the organization's financial forecasting process, including the development and maintenance of short- and long-term financial projections.
Asses financial risks and opportunities.
Support strategic planning through financial modeling and analysis.
Advise the CEO/Executive Director and leadership team on financial decisions.

Compliance and Audit

Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards, tax regulations, and nonprofit reporting requirements.
Coordinate and facilitate external audits, working with auditors to provide necessary documentation and address any audit findings.

Grant Management

Work collaboratively with the Grants Manager to:

Track and manage grant budgets and expenditures in accordance with grantor requirements
Establish grant budgets within the accounting system.
Manage Early Head Start, Federal & State Department Funding.
Ensure accurate allocation of shared costs.
Support grant reimbursement requests.
Maintaining documentation for grant audits.
Prepare financial reports required by grantors.

Risk Management

Identify and mitigate financial risks by implementing internal controls and best practices.
Develop and maintain a comprehensive risk management strategy for the organization.
Develop, implement, and maintain effective internal controls.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Maintain accounting policies and procedures.
Monitor compliance with organizational financial policies.
Recommend improvements to financial processes and systems.

Leadership and Supervision

Lead and mentor the finance team, fostering professional growth and accountability.
Provide training and support to staff on financial procedures and budget management.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
5-7 years of progressive accounting experience required.
5-7 years Nonprofit accounting experience required.
Experience with government grants and grant compliance.
Familiarity with Early Head Start program requirements preferred.
Experience using Quickbooks, Sage50, Bill.Com, Microsoft Excel, and Paycor.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to establish respectful, collaborative relationships with staff, parents, service providers, and community partners.
Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management abilities.
Successful completion of: BCI and FBI background checks, physical exam and TB test, pre-employment drug screening.

Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working at a computer.
Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
