SUMMARY
Reads residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial gas meters. Responds to service calls and customer service requests performing the following duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Reads residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial customer meters.
· Routes new service installations into existing meter routes.
· Posts usage amounts from meter reading into software for billing clerk.
· Assists with technology projects related to billing, mapping, and or meter reading.
· Performs atmospheric corrosion inspections on meter sets as directed.
· Troubleshoots and performs service calls including inspections, turn on/turn offs, meter removals, and read on/read offs as directed.
· Sets residential and small commercial meters as directed.
· Performs gas pilot lighting to meet customer needs.
· Troubleshoots, inspects, and repairs customer appliances and equipment as directed.
· Cleans, paints, and maintains above ground facilities as directed.
· Follows proper safety standards, procedures, and policies.
· Performs job duties independently and in crew work settings.
· Any other tasks or assignments as needed.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or GED. Meter reading experience is a plus. Previous gas plumbing experience is a plus.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to read, interpret and comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance plans, and drawings and procedure manuals. Ability to interact and effectively communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and customers.
COMPUTER SKILLS
Ability to use Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel) as required to perform job tasks. Ability to use and become proficient with billing, CIS, and meter reading software. Ability to become proficient with mapping software. Field employees are required to use a laptop or other mobile devices to complete service orders and look up meter and usage information.
MATHEMATICS SKILLS
Ability to perform and/or solve routine mathematical calculations and problems. Ability to perform these concepts using basic high school mathematics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages.
REASONING/COMPLEXITY
Ability to use some judgement to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form to perform routine installations, calculations, and solve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to handle equipment or tools, reach with hands and arms, crawl, climb or balance, and regularly required to lift and/ or move up to 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Regularly works around energized equipment, natural gas, other underground utilities, moving mechanical parts, and electricity. Frequently exposed to traffic hazards and outside weather conditions, including but not limited to; wet/humid conditions, extreme heat, and extreme cold. Occasionally exposed to high precarious places and confined spaces including attics, basements, and crawl spaces.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, TRAINING
Valid Alabama’s Driver’s License. Must complete DOT gas pipeline Operator Qualification courses as assigned. Must have or obtain Apprentice Gas Fitters card. Journeyman Gas Fitters Certification must be obtained within 2.5 years of accepting the position.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Maintain safe work habits and follow accepted safety standards, procedures, and policies; availability to work scheduled and unscheduled times to accommodate customer demands and emergency situations, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position subject to standby/call rotation. Must be dependable, meet attendance expectations, and maintain good driver’s record. Willing and able to attend training seminars to enhance job knowledge, including online training programs when necessary. Subject to pre-employment and random drug testing program.
Pay: $20.00 - $30.00 per hour
