The Department of Corrections, Office of the Commissioner, is recruiting for a Tribal
Liaison, located in either Anchorage or Juneau, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:

We are looking for someone that brings initiative and innovation into this new role for the Department of Corrections. Our successful applicant will be breaking ground on this important topic and will be tasked with researching, coordinating and maintaining ongoing statewide communications and collaborations with federally recognized tribes, tribal organizations, community partners and other governmental entities on behalf of the Department of Corrections and the Commissioner’s Office.

This position will work in a team environment and will interface daily with a variety of people including members of the public, field offices, other managers and directors.

Who We Are Looking For:

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following:

Cultural competency: A strong understanding of Alaska Native cultures, histories, values, and communication norms to support respectful and effective engagement.
Relationship building skills: The ability to establish trust with tribal governments, Native organizations, incarcerated individuals, and DOC staff.
Strong communication: Clear, diplomatic, and consistent communication skills, including the ability to translate between DOC processes and tribal perspectives.
Innovative and forward thinking: Exhibits independent initiative and the ability to develop and implement new strategies while working collaboratively between Divisions and outside entities. Capable of shaping emerging priorities, designing foundational processes, and advancing program development in areas where established frameworks are not yet in place.
Collaboration and problem solving: Skill in working across agencies, identifying shared goals, and helping resolve issues that involve both DOC and tribal partners.
Advocacy within system constraints: The ability to elevate tribal concerns and support culturally responsive programming while navigating DOC policies and operational realities.

Minimum Qualifications

This Position is Exempt and is Not in the Classified Services:
Exempt positions/employees are excluded from title 39, Chapter 25, State Personnel Act and the Personnel Rules adopted under it.

A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
