Albany County Assigned Counsel Program

The Assigned Counsel’s Office is seeking qualified attorneys to join our criminal court panel. The ideal candidates will have a strong commitment to criminal justice, indigent defense, and at least some experience in handling criminal matters in New York State.

About Us:

The Albany County Assigned Counsel Program is one of three public defense offices contained in Albany County. The Program is composed of a centralized administrative office and Panel Attorneys. Panel Attorneys represent indigent clients in both the Criminal and Family Courts in Albany County, as well as in the Appellate Courts in the State of New York. Panel Attorneys are assigned by the Assigned Counsel Program and/or the Court and are paid at the New York State statutory hourly rate of $158.00. These attorneys, unlike those employed by the Public Defender’s and the Alternate Public Defender’s offices, are who have been qualified by the Program to handle the matters that they are assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Attorneys of all experience levels are invited to apply. Minimum of JD from accredited law school, admittance to the NY State Bar and in good standing with the Office of Court Administration.

Our criminal panel is divided into two sub-panels; misdemeanor and felony. Each sub-panel has specific qualifications.

1. Misdemeanor Panel

To be eligible to be a member of the Misdemeanor Panel, attorneys must meet the following criteria:

1. They must have practiced criminal law in the State of New York for a minimum of one (1) year.

2. Possess experience and proficiency in all aspects of criminal defense representation.

3. Attend Continuing Legal Education (CLE) classes which focus on practicing criminal law.

2. Felony Panel

Non-Violent Felony Panel

To be eligible to be a member of the Non-Violent Felony Panel, attorneys must meet the

following criteria:

1. Practiced criminal law in the State of New York for a minimum of two (2) years.

2. Possess experience and proficiency in all aspects of criminal defense representation.

3. Experience in drafting motions, conducting suppression hearings and trials

4. Attend Continuing Legal Education (CLE) classes which focus on practicing criminal law.

Violent Felony Panel

To be eligible to be a member of the Violent Felony Panel, attorneys must meet the

following criteria:

1. Practiced criminal law in the State of New York for a minimum of three (3) years.

2. Possess experience and proficiency in all aspects of criminal defense representation.

3. experience in drafting motions, conducting suppression hearings and trials

4. Attend Continuing Legal Education (CLE) classes which focus on practicing criminal law.

Homicide Panel

To be eligible to be a member of the Homicide Panel, attorneys must meet the following

criteria:

1. Practiced criminal law in the State of New York for a minimum of five (5) years, with at least three (3) years of experience in handling violent felony cases.

2. Possess experience and proficiency in all aspects of criminal defense representation.

3. Experience in drafting motions, conducting suppression hearings and violent felony trials.

4. Attend Continuing Legal Education (CLE) classes which focus on practicing criminal law.
