Duties Description The Office of Communications at the Department of Labor (DOL) is responsible for all internal and external agency communications. The Office works in coordination across the agency to amplify the work the Department does on behalf of all agency customers.
The DOL Communications team is looking for an extremely detail oriented, highly creative team leader who thrives in a fast paced, collaborative environment. The ideal candidate thinks strategically about how to highlight the work of the DOL to the public and relevant stakeholders.
Standard Duties:
The Director of Public Information supervises our media relations, social media, video, and graphic design teams, and is responsible for the following:
- Identify opportunities to showcase the work of the Department to broad public audiences.
- Work with team managers to meet critical internal and external deadlines.
- Ensure timely and appropriate responses to media inquiries with an emphasis on transparency.
- Advise on strategies to make social media channels relevant and fresh to attract new audiences.
- Perform data analysis on social media metrics with the goal of increasing reach.
- Review all work from respective teams.
- Monitor all content creation for brand and messaging consistency.
- Oversee video and design content creation, ensuring accuracy and adherence to branding guidelines across a range of multimedia deliverables.
- Work in coordination with marketing staff on various projects to amplify initiatives internally and externally.
- Coach staff on performance improvement and support professional development.
Minimum Qualifications As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications:
Ten years of experience* in public relations, social media, and digital communications, two years of which must have included program management or supervision of professional staff.
- Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree in Communications, English, Public Relations, Social Media, Digital Communications, or a similar degree substitutes for two, four, or five years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.
- Two or more years at the managerial level
- Demonstrated success in building and maintaining coalitions and relationships with both external and internal stakeholders.
- Effective written and oral communication and high degree of responsiveness.
- In-depth experience managing social media channels with an emphasis on metric-based decisions that directly led to growth.
- Ability to make strategic decisions and commit to a course of action.
- Experience working with an active principal relaying agency messaging to a variety of stakeholders including the media and members of government.
Additional Comments Position specific job duties may include occasional altered work schedule or job assignments which require availability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments.
Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above.
