Engineering Technical Writer - Vacuum & TVAC Systems
Albuquerque, New Mexico • Full-Time • On-Site
Vacuum Chambers
TVAC Systems
Pressure Vessels
Engineering Manuals
CAD + Schematics
Aerospace + Semiconductor
Ideal Vacuum Products is seeking an engineering-minded Technical Writer to create user manuals, service manuals, assembly procedures, and technical documentation for vacuum chambers, thermal vacuum systems, pressure-related equipment, and scientific instrumentation. This role requires strong technical aptitude and the ability to understand how complex mechanical and vacuum systems work, not just the ability to write or simplify technical content.
This is not a general content writing, software documentation, or educational writing position. Candidates must be comfortable working with real mechanical systems, vacuum physics, pressure differentials, safety considerations, CAD drawings, electrical schematics, and engineering review processes.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop user manuals, service manuals, assembly procedures, and technical documentation for vacuum chambers, TVAC systems, and related equipment.
Work directly with engineers and technicians during product build, testing, and release.
Use engineering inputs, CAD drawings, electrical schematics, system layouts, test notes, and existing manuals to create accurate product documentation.
Build new manuals from existing documentation libraries while adapting content to the specific product being assembled and tested.
Document operating procedures, safety warnings, system limitations, maintenance steps, troubleshooting guidance, and service procedures.
Maintain document revisions and update manuals as products, components, and procedures change.
Create and maintain technical website product listings with accurate specifications, attributes, and product details.
Participate in documentation reviews with engineering, production, and technical staff to verify accuracy before release.
REQUIRED TECHNICAL APTITUDE
Strong understanding of mechanical systems, physical science, pressure, force, and equipment safety.
Ability to reason through vacuum system behavior, pressure differentials, atmospheric loading, and structural concerns.
Ability to recognize unsafe procedures, technically incorrect instructions, missing safety warnings, or improper equipment use.
Comfortable interpreting mechanical CAD drawings, system layouts, electrical schematics, and component-level documentation.
Ability to understand how complex machines operate and explain them accurately without losing technical integrity.
Practical engineering intuition and the ability to ask the right questions when documentation, drawings, or procedures appear incomplete or incorrect.
PREFERRED EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Physical Chemistry, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
Equivalent hands-on experience with vacuum systems, pressure vessels, scientific instruments, industrial equipment, or aerospace/semiconductor systems may be considered.
Technical writing experience is preferred, but strong engineering comprehension is the primary requirement.
DOCUMENTATION SCOPE
TVAC system user manuals.
Vacuum chamber operating manuals.
Service and troubleshooting manuals.
Assembly and installation procedures.
Electrical and mechanical support documentation.
Internal work instructions.
Technical website product listings.
Customer-facing product support documentation.
IDEAL CANDIDATE BACKGROUND
Vacuum chamber systems.
Thermal vacuum systems.
Pressure vessels or pressure-rated systems.
Aerospace test systems.
Semiconductor process equipment.
Scientific instrumentation.
Laboratory or industrial equipment.
Mechanical, electrical, or process documentation.
TECHNICAL SCREENING EXPECTATIONS
Candidates should be comfortable answering basic engineering reasoning questions related to vacuum systems, force, pressure, system safety, and equipment operation.
Pressure and force calculations.
Vacuum chamber loading.
Safe operating procedures.
Failure modes and no-go conditions.
Mechanical and electrical system interpretation.
REQUIRED SOFTWARE SKILLS
Adobe InDesign or similar document layout software.
Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator preferred.
Microsoft Word and Excel.
Basic HTML for website product listing formatting.
Ability to work from PDFs, CAD exports, drawings, schematics, photos, and existing manuals.
PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
Engineering-minded and technically curious.
Accurate, precise, and detail-oriented.
Comfortable challenging unclear or unsafe instructions.
Able to work independently with limited supervision.
Comfortable interviewing engineers, technicians, and subject matter experts.
Organized and disciplined with revisions, formatting, and documentation structure.
WHAT MAKES THIS ROLE DIFFERENT
We are not looking for a writer who simply simplifies complex topics. We are looking for a technically capable person who can understand complex vacuum systems and document them accurately for demanding customers in aerospace, semiconductor, research, and industrial markets.
EXAMPLE MANUALS
Applicants are encouraged to review the example manuals below. This position requires documentation similar in technical depth, structure, and accuracy.
ExploraVAC Standard System Manual
ExploraVAC MAX System Manual
SPAM Butterfly Valve Manual
SPAM Photodiode Bias Module Manual
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Resume required.
Writing samples strongly preferred.
Best samples include equipment manuals, service procedures, assembly instructions, engineering documentation, lab procedures, or industrial product documentation.
Candidates should be prepared to discuss their technical background and engineering reasoning during the interview process.
PAY & BENEFITS
Compensation: DOE, dependent on experience.
Health insurance and life insurance.
401K retirement package.
Dental and vision insurance.
Company performance bonus program.
Paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave.
