About the Gun Shop Project-New Mexico

The Gun Shop Project-New Mexico (GSP-NM) is a community-based firearm suicide prevention initiative focused on building trusted partnerships with New Mexico's firearm community.

GSP-NM works alongside firearm retailers, gun ranges, instructors, firearm owners, behavioral health professionals, veterans, and community partners to increase awareness of suicide prevention, lethal means safety, and voluntary safe firearm storage practices.

Our approach is collaborative, respectful, and non-regulatory. We believe firearm owners and firearm professionals are essential partners in preventing firearm suicide in New Mexico.

Position Overview

GSP-NM is seeking an approachable, reliable, and community-minded Outreach Contractor to help expand relationships with firearm businesses and firearm community members throughout New Mexico.

The Outreach Contractor will spend much of their time directly engaging with gun shops, firearm retailers, ranges, instructors, and other firearm-related organizations. The primary goal of this position is to build relationships and recruit new participants and partners into the Gun Shop Project-New Mexico.

This position is ideal for someone who is comfortable talking with people from diverse backgrounds, understands or is willing to learn about firearm culture, and can build relationships without judgment or pressure.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct outreach to firearm retailers, gun shops, ranges, firearm instructors, and other firearm community partners.
Introduce firearm businesses and community members to the Gun Shop Project-New Mexico and explain opportunities to participate.
Recruit new firearm retailers, instructors, organizations, and community members to participate in GSP-NM activities.
Build and maintain positive, trusted relationships with firearm community partners.
Conduct in-person visits, phone outreach, emails, and follow-up communication with prospective and existing partners.
Share GSP-NM educational materials and information about suicide prevention, lethal means safety, voluntary safe storage, and available trainings.
Assist with outreach for GSP-NM trainings, events, presentations, and community activities.
Identify opportunities to expand GSP-NM into additional communities throughout New Mexico.
Maintain basic documentation of outreach activities, contacts, follow-ups, and participating organizations.
Communicate community feedback, concerns, barriers, and opportunities to GSP-NM leadership.
Represent GSP-NM professionally and respectfully at community events, firearm-related events, trainings, and partner meetings.

Who We're Looking For

The strongest candidate will be someone who can walk into a gun shop, start a genuine conversation, listen to the people in the room, and build a relationship over time.

We are looking for someone who:

Has strong communication and relationship-building skills.
Is comfortable engaging directly with the firearm community.
Understands the importance of respecting firearm culture and diverse perspectives.
Can discuss sensitive topics such as suicide prevention in a respectful and approachable way.
Is comfortable conducting cold outreach and following up with potential partners.
Is dependable, organized, and able to work independently.
Is comfortable traveling within New Mexico for outreach activities.
Has experience in community outreach, firearms, military/veteran communities, behavioral health, suicide prevention, public health, or a related area.

Firearm community knowledge or experience is strongly preferred.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this position is not simply distributing materials. It is about building relationships and growing participation in the project.

The Outreach Contractor will help GSP-NM:

Reach firearm businesses and communities that have not previously participated in the project.
Recruit new gun shops, ranges, instructors, and firearm community partners.
Strengthen relationships with existing GSP-NM partners.
Increase participation in trainings, events, and suicide prevention activities.
Gather feedback from the firearm community to help GSP-NM remain responsive, relevant, and trusted.

GSP-NM recognizes that meaningful firearm suicide prevention requires partnership with the people who know firearms and firearm culture best.

This project is not about restricting firearm ownership or regulating firearm businesses. Our work focuses on education, partnership, voluntary practices, and providing firearm owners and businesses with practical tools that can help save lives.
