Full Job Description

Job Summary

The Tax Manager is responsible for managing the firm’s tax compliance and advisory functions, ensuring timely, accurate preparation and review of all client tax filings. This role provides leadership to the tax team, supports client relationships, oversees workflow through busy seasons, and drives consistency in the firm’s tax preparation and planning standards. The Tax Manager will collaborate closely with firm leadership to improve efficiency, train staff, and uphold Burgmaier & Associates’ reputation for world-class client service within the dental and small business community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Tax Preparation and Review

Review complex business and individual tax returns (Forms 1120, 1120S, 1065, 1040, 990, and 941) prepared by staff for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
Prepare higher-level or specialized returns as needed (multi-state, consolidated, or amended).
Ensure all supporting schedules, workpapers, and electronic files meet firm standards.
Maintain technical knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations and communicate changes to staff and clients.
Conduct tax research and provide written summaries of findings and recommendations.

Tax Planning and Advisory

Provide proactive tax planning, projections, and strategies for clients to minimize liabilities and maximize savings.
Analyze client financial statements to identify opportunities for advisory engagement (e.g., entity structure, depreciation planning, retirement funding).
Collaborate with Accounting Managers to align year-end planning with client accounting results.
Review quarterly estimated payments and advise clients on safe harbor calculations.

Staff Leadership and Development

Supervise, mentor, and review work of tax associates and seasonal staff.
Conduct annual performance reviews and support professional development and CPE tracking.
Provide on-the-job technical training, review feedback, and workflow guidance through Canopy and UltraTax.
Lead internal tax team meetings and busy-season kickoff sessions.

Workflow Management and Quality Control

Manage tax department deadlines, scheduling, and task tracking in Canopy.
Ensure all returns are completed, reviewed, and delivered by firm deadlines.
Support automation and process improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
Oversee e-filing procedures and maintain quality control on submission confirmations.

Client Relationship Management

Serve as the primary tax contact for assigned clients, ensuring prompt communication and resolution of issues.
Participate in client review meetings and present tax results clearly and professionally.
Maintain awareness of client goals, compliance risks, and opportunities for value-added services.
Support proposal development for new or expanded tax engagements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Advanced knowledge of federal and state tax law, including partnership, S-corporation, and individual taxation.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency in UltraTax, Xero, Canopy, and Microsoft Excel.
Excellent leadership, review, and time management abilities.
Clear and professional communication with clients and internal staff.
High ethical standards and strict adherence to confidentiality.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master’s in Taxation preferred.
CPA or EA license preferred
Minimum 5–7 years of public accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory tax role.
Experience with multi-entity clients, professional service businesses, and healthcare/dental industry taxation preferred.
