Full Job Description

Job Summary

Animal Care Attendant (ACA) at the Pet Resource Center plays a vital role in helping pet families stay together by providing temporary, high-quality care for owned pets during times of crisis. This position is responsible for daily care and well-being of pets housed and new pets being admitted into the PitStop4Pets Emergency Boarding Program at the Pet Resource Center, as well as general care of the facility. The ACA delivers compassionate, humane, and Fear Free care to all pets while maintaining a welcoming, supportive environment for pet owners, fellow staff, and volunteers.

Specific Duties – Tier 1

Provide humane pet-centered care, including:

· Provide compassionate, pet centered care for all boarded pets, including ensuring access to adequate food and clean water at all times.

· Maintain a safe, clean environment for the animals by following standard cleaning procedures in all interior and exterior Pet Resource Center areas.

· Engage in Fear Free practices and provide regular mental and physical enrichment to boarded pets as directed.

· Provide general grooming of boarded pets including bathing as needed.

· Conduct thorough daily observations of all pets, promptly noting any health or behavioral concerns and communicating findings to a supervisor.

· Perform initial health examinations on incoming pets and ensuring the health of all pets in the facility by performing required tasks such as vaccinating or deworming.

· Administer medications as directed by a licensed veterinarian and transporting pets to and from the veterinary clinic as needed.

· Complete regular daily rounds, logs, and data entry tasks accurately and in a timely manner.

Provide compassionate, person-centered care to clients and fellow staff, including:

· Maintain a safe, clean environment for the public by following standard cleaning procedures in all interior and exterior Pet Resource Center areas.

· Conduct daily sweeps of fields and trash cans, disposing of any waste and debris.

· Engage in trauma-informed interactions with visiting pet parents.

Other Duties

· Provide support in maintaining the grounds and facilities.

· Maintain equipment to assure proper functioning and safety and report any damaged equipment to supervisor.

· Inventory and stock all supplies needed for kennel operation.

· Provide support for other departments as needed.

· Accurately use computer programs as necessary.

· Perform other duties as assigned by Community Initiatives Manager or Director of Community Programs.

Job Conditions

Indoor/Outdoor facility often exposed to the elements. The activity includes both seated office duties as well as animal management activities, which may include handling and restraint of animals that are fractious or excited. This includes pets that may weigh over 50 pounds. Some of the work is done standing, kneeling, walking, and bending. Urine and feces are often present, as are a variety of hazardous chemical agents. Workers are exposed to animal bites, various viruses, needles, and other sharp objects. Regularly exposed to strong and pungent odors.

Contacts

Contact with staff, volunteers, veterinarians, other animal organizations, animal care professionals, and the public. Supervision of volunteers working in processing/kennel area.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education

Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Must possess a valid New Mexico driver’s license, some computer skills. Graduate of animal health/technician school preferred.

Experience

Prefer one year in an animal related field such as a kennel, clinic, or boarding facility.

Animal Humane prohibits the possession, use or distribution of alcohol, cannabis, and unlawful illicit drugs by employees on Animal Humane’s site and/or while doing business for Animal Humane. Animal Humane may perform drug and alcohol tests for any reason at any time including the following: pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, follow-up and random.
