Safety Manager - Construction

Job Description

Spear D Construction is seeking an experienced and proactive Safety Manager to lead our company-wide safety and compliance program. Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.

This is a highly visible leadership position responsible for protecting the health, safety, and well-being of our employees, subcontractors, customers, and visitors. The Safety Manager will partner closely with company leadership, Operations, Project Management, field supervisors, and HR to strengthen our safety culture, reduce risk, maintain regulatory compliance, and ensure safe work practices across all construction operations.

We’re looking for a safety professional who isn’t satisfied with simply checking boxes. The right person will be comfortable in the field, proactive about identifying risk, confident coaching employees and leaders, and willing to respond when situations require immediate attention. Strong communication skills are essential, and bilingual English/Spanish communication skills are highly preferred to effectively engage and support our diverse field teams.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

Safety Leadership & Field Support

Lead by example through safe work practices, professionalism, accountability, and integrity.
Promote a proactive safety culture focused on prevention, accountability, and employee engagement.
Conduct regular jobsite visits, safety observations, audits, and inspections.
Work closely with field leadership and the Safety Coordinator to ensure safety requirements are consistently followed.
Coach supervisors and employees on hazard recognition, safe work procedures, and corrective actions.
Respond with urgency to safety concerns, jobsite incidents, hazards, injuries, vehicle accidents, and corrective actions.
Respond in person to vehicle accidents, incidents, and job-related injuries when necessary to support employees, their families, and the company.
Communicate significant incidents, including accidents, injuries, and utility line hits, to management in accordance with company procedures.
Exercise sound judgment during emergencies, investigations, and challenging operational situations.

Safety Programs, Training & Compliance

Lead and manage Spear D Construction’s company-wide safety and compliance program.
Develop, implement, maintain, and continuously improve safety policies, procedures, manuals, and best practices.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Maintain current knowledge of construction safety regulations, environmental requirements, and industry best practices.
Coordinate employee safety meetings, toolbox talks, orientations, and training programs.
Support employee onboarding by ensuring required safety orientation, certifications, and compliance requirements are completed.
Validate and manage safety training and documentation required through systems such as Avetta and ISN.
Maintain safety manuals, SDS documentation, emergency action plans, required regulatory postings, and other compliance records.
Ensure employees, subcontractors, and visitors comply with company and jobsite safety requirements.

Incident Investigation & Risk Management

Lead incident investigations and root cause analyses.
Recommend corrective actions and ensure appropriate follow-through.
Monitor incident, injury, vehicle accident, and near-miss trends to identify opportunities for improvement.
Support pre-construction planning through project safety reviews, risk assessments, and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
Report all OJI, accidents, and incidents to Risk Management and enter required information into the appropriate company portal and Smartsheet tracking systems.
Maintain accurate OSHA logs, incident reports, corrective action documentation, training records, audits, and safety metrics.
Track and support safety performance measures, including EMR and incident-rate information.
Identify opportunities to improve PPE, equipment, training, processes, and technology.

Workers’ Compensation & Emergency Response

Coordinate workers’ compensation, return-to-work activities, and injury management with HR, insurance providers, and applicable third parties.
Manage relationships with safety vendors, consultants, insurance representatives, and third-party administrators.
Maintain emergency preparedness plans, evacuation procedures, and incident response protocols.
Lead emergency response coordination and support crisis management activities when needed.

Fleet, DOT & Environmental Safety

Support fleet safety and DOT compliance programs.
Assist with contractor prequalification and customer-specific safety requirements.
Support environmental compliance involving hazardous materials, spill prevention, and waste management.
Maintain accurate documentation required for regulatory and contractual compliance.
