The Director of Development & Marketing is responsible for the strategic leadership, execution, and growth of Animal Humane New Mexico’s fundraising, marketing, communications, and donor engagement efforts. This position oversees all philanthropic revenue streams and brand strategy to support the organization’s mission, annual operating goals, capital priorities, and long-term sustainability.
The Director leads a comprehensive, donor-centered fundraising program that includes major gifts, annual giving, monthly giving, planned giving, corporate sponsorships, grants, events, digital fundraising, integrated marketing campaigns, and donor stewardship. The Director also oversees organizational marketing, public messaging, storytelling, and community engagement strategies to strengthen visibility, trust, and support for the organization.
This role requires a progressive, strategic leader who understands evolving philanthropic trends, integrated marketing practices, digital engagement, AI and technology integration, and best practices in nonprofit fundraising and communications.
The Director serves as a member of the leadership team and works closely with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, donors, sponsors, media, and community stakeholders.
Strategic Leadership and Organizational Planning
- Develop and implement comprehensive annual Development and Marketing strategic plans with measurable goals, timelines, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Collaborate with Executive Leadership and the Board of Directors to align fundraising and marketing initiatives with organizational priorities and strategic growth.
- Create and sustain a culture of philanthropy and donor stewardship throughout the organization.
- Monitor industry trends, donor behavior, emerging technologies, AI tools, and nonprofit best practices to continuously strengthen organizational effectiveness.
- Evaluate and improve fundraising and marketing systems, workflows, and technology integrations to maximize efficiency and donor engagement.
- Provide leadership in organizational messaging, reputation management, and brand positioning.
Fundraising and Revenue Development
- Oversee and grow all fundraising programs, including:

- Manage and maintain a portfolio of major donors, sponsors, and key stakeholders.
- Partner with the Executive Director and Board members on donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
- Develop and execute donor retention, reactivation, and acquisition strategies using data-driven approaches.
- Identify and pursue new revenue opportunities, partnerships, sponsorships, and community collaborations.
- Ensure timely donor acknowledgment, stewardship, and relationship management practices.
- Oversee donor engagement initiatives, cultivation events, and stewardship experiences.
Marketing, Communication, and Brand Management
- Lead organizational marketing and communications strategies across digital, print, social media, web, video, email, and public relations platforms.
- Ensure consistent branding, messaging, and storytelling across all organizational communications.
- Oversee the development of compelling content that inspires engagement, donor support, adoptions, volunteerism, advocacy, and community trust.
- Direct integrated campaigns supporting fundraising, programs, events, and organizational awareness.
- Monitor analytics and engagement metrics to optimize communication effectiveness and audience growth.
- Oversee media relations, crisis communications support, and public-facing messaging as needed.
Financial Oversight and Data Management
- Develop and manage departmental budgets, revenue projections, and expense tracking.
- Define, monitor, and report KPIs related to fundraising performance, donor retention, digital engagement, campaign performance, and return on investment.
- Ensure donor database integrity, segmentation, reporting accuracy, and strategic utilization through CRM systems and related technologies.
- Analyze fundraising and marketing data to guide strategic decision-making and improve outcomes.
- Prepare regular reports and presentations for Executive Leadership and the Board of Directors.
Leadership and Staff Development
- Recruit, supervise, develop, and support a high-performing Development and Marketing team.
- Foster a collaborative, innovative, and solutions-oriented team culture.
- Promote cross-departmental collaboration and organizational alignment.
- Provide coaching, mentorship, accountability, and professional development opportunities for staff.
- Encourage creativity, innovation, and continuous improvement within the department.
- Participate in leadership meetings, organizational planning, and culture-building initiatives.
Events and Community Engagement
- Provide strategic oversight and support for all fundraising and stewardship events.
- Support sponsorship acquisition, donor engagement, and event revenue growth.
- Participate in organizational and community events as a representative of Animal Humane New Mexico.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with donors, volunteers, sponsors, vendors, media, and community partners.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Oversee relationships with Development and Marketing vendors, consultants, agencies, and service providers.
- Ensure compliance with ethical fundraising standards, donor confidentiality, and organizational policies.
- Maintain accurate records, contracts, and reporting documentation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Job Conditions
This is a full-time, exempt position that requires flexible working hours that will include evening and weekend hours.
Contacts
The position is in contact with staff and volunteers from all areas of AHA, as well as board members, large and small businesses/corporations/organizations/foundations; donors; general public; media and vendors.
Job Requirements
Education
Undergraduate degree in a related field such as communications, public relations, marketing or business; CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) and/or APR (Accredited Public Relations professional)
Experience
A minimum of five years of proven success in the areas of fundraising and development as identified in the job summary. Demonstrated success managing comprehensive fundraising programs and achieving revenue growth. Candidate should have positive working relationships with major funding sources, nationally and locally, as well as influential social and business/corporate contacts within the Albuquerque community. Three to five years of supervisory experience required. Strong understanding of digital marketing, email marketing, social media, and donor engagement platforms.

Proven fundraiser, with particular success in major gifts solicitation and closing; strong leadership, analytical & planning skills; outstanding verbal & written communication skills; proven organizational & multi-tasking skills; outstanding interpersonal skills with ability to work with and motivate diverse individuals and groups; ability to work independently & monitor own performance objectives; creative and innovative; excellent public speaker; knowledge of donor software programs; word processing, e-mail and Internet skills required.
