Medical Assistant

Organization: TriUnity Healthcare
Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico (with local travel as needed)
Reports To: Medical Director and Practice Manager

We partner with hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and community organizations to deliver compassionate, evidence-based care to individuals living with substance use and mental health disorders.

We’re looking for an organized, dependable, and compassionate Medical Assistant to become a foundational member of our growing team. This is an exceptional opportunity for someone who enjoys working directly with patients while also helping build the systems, workflows, and operations of an innovative healthcare organization.

Unlike many traditional medical assistant positions, this role provides exposure to addiction medicine, psychiatry, behavioral health, quality improvement, grant-funded healthcare innovation, and practice operations. You’ll work closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, therapists, peer recovery specialists, and executive leadership while helping build new clinical programs that improve access to care throughout New Mexico.

Position Summary

The Medical Assistant is a hybrid clinical and administrative position responsible for supporting patient care, coordinating day-to-day practice operations, and helping improve the systems that allow TriUnity Healthcare to thrive.

Working closely with providers, therapists, peer recovery specialists, and leadership, this individual will play a key role in delivering exceptional patient care while supporting the organization’s continued growth. Because TriUnity is a growing healthcare organization, team members wear multiple hats and work collaboratively to support one another. As the organization expands, responsibilities will become increasingly specialized, creating opportunities for professional growth and leadership.

Primary Responsibilities

Clinical Support

Prepare provider schedules and patient charts by reviewing records, reconciling medications, organizing outside records, identifying outstanding laboratory or diagnostic results, and ensuring documentation is complete prior to patient visits.
Prepare patients for medical appointments by obtaining vital signs, withdrawal assessments (COWS, CIWA), and other pertinent clinical information.
Perform medication reconciliation and update medication lists within the electronic health record.
Perform urine drug testing and other point-of-care testing according to established protocols.
Collect and process specimens as appropriate.
Assist providers during patient visits and procedures.
Coordinate laboratory testing, diagnostic studies, referrals, and follow-up appointments.
Assist with medication refill requests according to organizational protocols.
Provide patient education regarding medications, treatment plans, follow-up appointments, preventive care, and clinic policies within established protocols.
Assist with medication inventory, medication samples, and clinical supplies.

Administrative & Practice Operations

Coordinate day-to-day practice operations to ensure efficient clinic workflow and an exceptional patient experience.
Manage provider and staff schedules, clinic calendars, and meeting logistics.
Answer and triage phone calls, emails, patient inquiries, and communications with community partners.
Assist with patient registration, scheduling, insurance verification, appointment reminders, and patient intake.
Obtain medication prior authorizations and coordinate insurance-related documentation as needed.
Process medical records, referrals, and releases of information.
Maintain accurate documentation within the electronic health record.
Assist with provider inbox management and patient messages as directed.
Serve as a liaison between providers, patients, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, pharmacies, laboratories, and community partners.

Care Coordination

Help coordinate referrals for therapy, psychiatry, addiction treatment, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), residential treatment, and specialty medical care.
Conduct patient outreach for missed appointments, follow-up visits, laboratory monitoring, preventive care, and quality initiatives.
Assist with transitions of care between hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, outpatient settings, and community providers.
Support a positive patient experience through compassionate, timely communication.

Qualifications

Required

Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent certification.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
One to three years of experience in a medical office, outpatient clinic, behavioral health, or related healthcare setting.
Excellent organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
Strong computer proficiency and willingness to learn new technology.
Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.

Preferred

Experience in addiction medicine, psychiatry, behavioral health, primary care, or skilled nursing facilities.
Experience with ChartPath, PointClickCare, or similar electronic health record systems.
Experience with insurance verification, prior authorizations, and payer requirements.
Experience supporting grant-funded healthcare programs.
Experience tracking quality metrics or healthcare performance measures.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint).
