Full Job Description

Position Summary

Campagna Center delivers educational and social development programs for Alexandria children, teens, and adults. Our New Neighbors English Language Learner (ELL) program offers English classes and services to immigrants and refugees from around the world who have settled in Alexandria and the Northern Virginia area. With a mission of helping adults and families through multiple services, the program provides a safe place where people from many cultures can build friendships and become thriving members of our community while learning English.

New Neighbors is a two-semester, academic year program that includes multiple levels of adult English classes taught with a structured curriculum utilizing a rich selection of teaching materials; family literacy events for parents and children to strengthen speaking and reading skills at home; guest speakers who provide information on entrepreneurship, jobs, housing, educational opportunities, and legal services, and additional learning opportunities such as computer skills classes and a 10-week citizenship course. On average, 75-80% of students demonstrate enough progress to advance to the next level of instruction at the end of each academic year. Students report high satisfaction with the classes and enjoy being part of a caring, multicultural community.

To understand evolving community needs and how we can fill gaps in services in Alexandria, Campagna Center recently conducted a strategic planning process that included surveys of New Neighbors students and multilingual Campagna Center families, focus groups with staff and volunteers, and assessments of program data. In response to these learnings, Campagna is looking to hire an additional team member to develop, pilot, and assess a new curriculum and program model for New Neighbors that will provide more intensive and comprehensive support specifically for adult EL learners who have Pre-K and school-aged children. This person will help us finalize the new curriculum and program model in Year 1, and then serve as an instructor to implement the programming in Years 2-3 and set up the program for future success.

Project Specialist Focus:

Develop, pilot, and assess a new strategy to better serve multilingual families of preK and elementary-aged children via the New Neighbors program

Reports to: Program Manager, New Neighbors

Primary Duties:

Conduct research and literature review to identify effective family literacy programs geared towards multilingual families, presenting recommendations for the 27-28 program year (and tested in a pilot in Summer 2027)
Design a program that incorporates a recommended multi-level curriculum for adult students with lower English proficiency and instructional modules specifically to help parents develop language skills, vocabulary, and knowledge that can help them navigate challenges and support their child’s learning, development, and well-being
Create embedded family literacy activities (Parents and Children Together-“PACT” time) and resources to support learning beyond the classroom at home
Help identify outcomes for the program as well as assessments and process to track literacy skill growth of participants’ children
Create training materials for volunteer teachers and administer onsite orientations and professional development workshop sessions to train volunteers on program design, curricula, and TESOL best practices
Participate in regular meetings to foster understanding of the program within the Campagna Center and with other community stakeholders
In Summer 2027, implement a 6-week pilot of new program design, serving as primary instructor for ELL classes and “Family Camp” week of PACT activities where parents are bringing children to class for joint instruction

Location and Time:

This is 12-month temporary position with the potential for expansion based on securing additional funding streams in Y2 and Y3. In Y1, the program will be designed in the first six months and implemented in Summer 2027, with this person serving as primary instructor of the program a 6-week intensive with the help of volunteer class aide(s).
A breakdown of anticipated hours for project work and the timeframe and schedule will be outlined depending on your hire date, but a tentative schedule is below:

Please notify supervisor in advance if number of hours is expected to exceed the amount of hours as outlined, and with foreseeable absences and vacation time when you will not be available
All program design work can be done remotely/virtually via Zoom, except for training
Program implementation in Y1 will occur at Campagna Center Headquarters (418 S Washington St, Alexandria, VA 22314)
Expectation that Campagna Center email will be checked on daily basis and respond to requests/questions within 2 business days

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree required, additional TESOL-certification a plus
Experience developing or implementing family literacy and engagement programs geared towards a multilingual immigrant/refugee population or within a 2GEN framework
Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and online platforms/tools (Zoom, Google Drive, SurveyMonkey)
Ability to work in a remote location independently or at Campagna Center headquarters, based on program and project needs. Candidate must live within driving distance of our headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia.
Experience working in racially, ethnically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse communities.

Compensation: $35 per hour
