Adult ESL Instructor (Full-time)

The Family Place (TFP) mission is to empower low-income families and to foster the optimal development of their young children through educational and support services.

The Family Place Public Charter School (TFPPCS) mission is to improve the literacy and workplace skills of low-income limited English proficient adults in the District of Columbia so that they and their family are self-sustaining, employable, and engaged in their community.

Job Summary

The Adult ESL Instructor will support diverse classrooms of adult ESL learners, some of whom have low literacy or interrupted education. The position will collaborate with the academic team and report directly to the Chief Academic Officer.

Instructional Responsibilities

Instruct two three-hour adult ESL classes daily Monday - Thursday.
May teach on a split schedule (morning and evening) or afternoon and evening and/or instruct classes in person, hybrid, or online, depending on hiring needs.
Develop daily lesson plans with clear objectives that are aligned with the syllabus and post lesson plans on Google Drive.
Incorporate CASAS competencies, life skills English, CCRS, and workforce skills into lesson plans and instructional activities.
Collaborate with academic team members teaching the same ESL level to plan, organize, coordinate, and share lessons/materials.
Incorporate a variety of teaching methods and instructional activities to keep students engaged.
Evaluate students' classwork, homework, unit tests, and CASAS results on a timely basis.
Hold one-on-one meetings with students throughout the school year to give feedback on academic progress and student goals and make recommendations for student advancement.
Identify materials for targeted tutoring and coordinate sessions and next steps with tutors.
Use computers and technology resources to supplement instruction.
Establish classroom rules for behavior and enforce policies and procedures outlined in the Student Handbook.

Reporting/Administrative Responsibilities

Maintain accurate, complete student records in QuickBase in compliance with school policies on attendance, absenteeism, tutoring, and referrals.
Record each student's daily attendance and instructional hours.
Monitor and follow up on student absences weekly, and refer chronic absences to case management, the CAO, and/or registration.
Set up and use Google Classroom to assign and assess classwork and homework.
Set up and use a WhatsApp group to communicate with students daily.
Proctor CASAS testing sessions throughout the school year.
Register, screen, and orient new students during open enrollment.
Attend monthly staff and academic team meetings.
Participate in peer observations and provide feedback to other instructors.
Complete 15 hours of professional development annually to maintain and strengthen professional competence.
Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful candidates will possess the following qualifications:

Must live in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and be able to work in-person
B.S. in Education, or a related field
M.A. in Adult Education or TESOL highly preferred
Minimum three years of experience teaching ESL to adult students
Commitment to working with low-income, low literacy immigrant families
Ability to collaborate in a team environment with other educators
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
Proficiency with Google Classroom, Go Guardian, Zoom, and other educational technology tools
Strong digital literacy skills and ability to learn and implement new technology in the classroom
Spanish proficiency desired

Reports to: Chief Academic Officer

Salary

Starting: $60,237. See TFPPCS Teacher STEP Pay Scale for 26-27

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.

Hours: Full-time, Monday-Friday (40 hours/week); split schedules and/or evening hours may be required depending on the position.
