About Shakey’s Pizza
Founded in Sacramento in 1954, Shakey’s Pizza Parlor is an American classic — the original franchise pizza chain in the United States. For over 70 years, Shakey’s has been the place where families and friends come together over great pizza, crispy chicken, famous Mojo potatoes and a fun, welcoming atmosphere. Today, Shakey’s operates 27 corporate-owned restaurants across Southern California, headquartered in Alhambra, CA, with approximately 950 team members. We’re currently in the midst of an exciting chapter: a comprehensive remodel and rebrand program that will refresh our restaurants for the next generation of guests. Join us and help bring that vision to life.
Job Description
Shakey’s Pizza is looking for a Working Superintendent to lead and coordinate the renovation and refresh of our restaurant locations across Southern California. This is a full-time position reporting directly to the President & COO.
Your primary responsibility is to coordinate the trades and manage each remodel through to completion. You will source, vet, interview, hire and schedule licensed subcontractor teams for each trade, then coordinate and inspect their work to ensure it meets Shakey’s specifications, quality standards, budget and schedule, while keeping several sites moving at once. The “working” in the title means you’re also able to perform hands-on construction and repair work when the job calls for it — stepping in to finish, repair or move work along yourself so a project doesn’t stall. This is a when-needed capability rather than full-time work alongside the subcontractors, and it keeps you close to the quality and pace of the job.
This position does not supervise a crew of direct employees. Each subcontractor provides its own trade supervision and holds its own license. You are, however, accountable to Shakey’s leadership for the quality, timeliness and final outcome of every remodel project. A general contractor’s license is not required.
Shakey’s is currently executing a comprehensive remodel program across approximately 25 restaurant locations over the next two years. Projects will overlap, so you’ll be managing several active job sites at various stages of completion at once.
Because our restaurants remain open during remodels, all construction work is performed overnight, after regular business hours. You’ll coordinate closely with store management to ensure a clean, safe handoff between construction activity and daily restaurant operations.
Qualifications & RequirementsRequired
- Minimum 5 years of experience in construction, remodeling or the building trades, including coordinating subcontractors or trades through completion, along with hands-on familiarity with general construction, carpentry, finish and repair work
- Proven ability to source, vet, hire, schedule and coordinate licensed trade subcontractors, and to inspect their work against project specifications, quality standards and timelines
- Proven project-management ability: managing budgets, tracking costs and keeping several concurrent job sites on schedule and to specification
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications and project plans
- Strong communication skills, including preparing daily site updates and reporting project status to senior leadership
- Able to safely use hand and power tools and to competently perform general construction, carpentry and repair work when needed
- Proficiency with basic technology tools for project documentation and communication (e.g., Microsoft Office, email and digital photography for progress documentation)
- Valid California driver’s license, clean driving record and reliable personal vehicle
- Willingness to work a schedule built primarily around overnight and after-hours shifts, as all construction takes place while restaurants are closed to guests
- Physical ability to work on active job sites: standing, walking, bending, kneeling and climbing ladders and stairs for extended periods; using hand and power tools as needed; and lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds
Preferred
- Experience approving change orders and managing project scope with subcontractors
- Experience specifically in restaurant or food service facility remodels
- Established network of reliable, licensed trade subcontractors in the Southern California market
- Trade certifications or licenses (e.g., electrical, plumbing or HVAC)
- OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction safety training certification
- Knowledge of California building codes and local permitting processes relevant to commercial interior renovations
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Experience working in or with multi-unit retail or restaurant organizations
