Role Summary
The Lead Field Technician is an in-field-based technical role, responsible for overseeing the installation, commissioning, and validation of meteorological (MET) systems for GroundWork Renewables. This position requires advanced technical expertise, strong leadership skills, and the ability to independently manage field activities, mentor technicians, and coordinate with EPC teams and site personnel to ensure safe, high-quality project execution.
Responsibilities
The field technician will join another GroundWork field lead colleague to install and commission meteorological (MET) systems/equipment. This includes:
Technical & Field Execution
- Lead and perform installation and commissioning of meteorological (MET) systems
- Assemble and install mounting structures, sensors, enclosures, and associated hardware
- Perform complex wiring, testing, troubleshooting, and validation of instruments
- Configure, update, and maintain datalogger programs operating systems and firmware
- Set up quality control (QC) kits and conduct system performance and validation tests
- Oversee and complete commissioning activities, including documentation, photo sets, and instrument validation
Communication & Coordination
- Supervise, mentor, and coach field technicians and junior staff
- Act as the on-site technical lead, ensuring work is completed to company and client standards
- Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for clients and site personnel as well as GroundWork Project Managers
- Provide proactive communication for EPC-related work, including site arrival notifications, safety orientations, daily check-ins, and work progress updates
- Coordinate logistics, equipment movement, and team transportation, including driving company vehicles
Safety & Compliance
- Lead by example in following all site-specific safety procedures and company safety policies
- Ensure consistent and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by all field personnel
- Identify and mitigate field risks, escalating safety concerns as needed
Skills/Qualifications
Technical Experience
● Associates Degree or 3+ years experience as a field technician in solar, wind, or environmental monitoring systems
● Demonstrated experience leading field installations and commissioning activities
● Strong mechanical assembly and electrical wiring/troubleshooting skills
● Basic understanding of communication devices operating on TCP/IP and Modbus protocols
Professional Skills
● Proficiency using PC computers with basic hardware, software, and networking knowledge
● Experience mentoring or supervising technicians in a field environment
● Excellent communication, organizational, and documentation skills
● Familiarity with EPC site operations and construction safety requirements
● Strong commitment to safety, quality, and operational standards
● Ability to work independently in remote locations with minimal supervision
Physical Requirements & Travel
● Ability to lift, carry, and install field equipment and tools
● Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and remote environments
● Ability to work at heights and on construction or undeveloped sites
● Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
● Willingness to travel frequently for extended field assignments

* Please note that the position can be based almost anywhere in the United States, provided it is in close proximity to a major airport to accommodate the weekly travel requirements. Additionally, this is a non-exempt position, making it eligible for both overtime and double-time pay.
