Job Description
The Maintenance Specialist is responsible for equipment maintenance on all New Leaf’s federal contracts. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, tractors, lawn mowers, lawn trimmers, small engines requiring fluid and oil changes; carpet cleaners such as steamers, vacuums; floor polishers such as buffers, walk-behind scrubbers, and ride-on scrubbers.
Compensation & Benefits:
- 26.53/Hour (Current Department of Labor Wage Determination Rate)
- Excellent benefits package:
- Health & Welfare benefit ($5.55/Hour) pays for health insurance after 60 days of employment. Optional dental & vision – cost is out of pocket.
- 11 Paid holidays
- Paid sick leave – accrues at 1 hour for every 30 hours worked
- Up to 2 weeks paid vacation per year after one year of employment
- 401k matching after one year of employment, up to 4%
- Paid Life insurance: $50,000 after 90 days of employment
- Longevity stipend with Board of Directors approval
Schedule
Monday - Friday 7:30 AM-4:00 PM and as needed (Potential winter layoff Nov-Feb)
Requirements
- Ability to pass NAS Whidbey Island Background check at time of hire and for duration of employment. Felonies will prohibit base access.
- Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record.
- Ability to obtain and maintain approval to operate New Leaf vehicles approved by New Leaf’s insurance carrier.
- Ability to obtain various training requirements: Environmental training, Fire school training, restricted driver license training and Source America training.
- Ability to obtain current Multimedia or Industrial First Aid/CPR certification.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Requires compliance to written government contract standards in accordance with the Performance Work Statement.
- Check and maintain equipment to ensure that it is in working order.
- Investigate complaints about down service and equipment, and take corrective action.
- Drives to and from various locations on base using company vehicles e.g. sedans, vans, trucks and trucks pulling trailers. Must be able to and/or must learn to make wide turns, reverse park, back into spaces using a truck and trailer.
- Recommend changes that could improve service and increase operational efficiency.
- Instruct staff of work policies and procedures, and the use and maintenance of equipment.
- Use and operate all equipment being serviced.
- Clean and maintain tools used for shop or equipment maintenance.
- Report malfunctioning equipment immediately to Director of Operations.
- Submit supply needs to Director of Operations.
- Use extension ladders, step ladders and step stools.
- Be familiar with and adhere to New Leaf’s safety and emergency procedures.
- Participate with Human Resources Department when needed in development and training.
- Be conscious and adhere to the mission of New Leaf: “To promote independence and quality of life through employment.”

Physical Requirements and Essential Functions
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- This position requires the ability to do repetitive movements, standing, walking, bending or twisting, climbing stairs, kneeling and reaching.
- Ability to endure up to 8 hours a day of standing, walking, and working on steep inclines such as hills and unleveled ground.
- Ability to work in diverse weather conditions (e.g., wet, cold and hot).
- Requires using hands to handle, control, or feel objects and tools.
- Requires the use of foot controls.
- Ability to move, lift, handle or carry up the 50lbs. / push and pull up to 70lbs.
- Periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must wear full length pants and steel toed boots/shoes. Steel toed boots/shoes expenses will be reimbursed annually up to $150 per year.
