Carbide Tool & Cutter Grinder – SAACKE/TTB
Company: Southern California Precision Machining (SCPM)
Location: Anaheim, California
Employment Type: Full-time
About SCPM
Southern California Precision Machining is a high-volume, advanced CNC manufacturing company operating more than 200 machines. Our equipment includes multi-axis mills, lathes, mill-turn machines, robotic automation, and other advanced manufacturing systems. We are looking for skilled individuals who take pride in precision, consistency, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Position Summary
SCPM is seeking an experienced CNC Tool & Cutter Grinder with hands-on experience setting up and operating SAACKE/TTB CNC grinding machines. This position is responsible for manufacturing and regrinding high-precision cutting tools made from carbide, high-speed steel, and other tool materials.
The ideal candidate can independently complete machine setups, select and prepare grinding wheels, understand cutting-tool geometry, inspect finished tools, and make the necessary program or machine adjustments to maintain tight tolerances. Experience operating a machine without performing setups will be considered, but setup and programming experience is strongly preferred.
Primary Responsibilities
- Set up, program, operate, and troubleshoot SAACKE/TTB CNC tool-grinding machines.
- Manufacture and regrind cutting tools such as drills, end mills, reamers, step tools, form tools, and other special cutting tools.
- Read and interpret tool drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.
- Understand and produce critical tool features, including rake angles, relief angles, helix geometry, flutes, lands, radii, points, and cutting edges.
- Select, mount, qualify, and dress diamond, CBN, or other grinding wheels based on the tool material and grinding operation.
- Set up collets, workholding, steady rests, tailstocks, loaders, probes, and other machine accessories as required.
- Inspect completed tools using micrometers, indicators, optical comparators, tool-measuring systems, and other precision inspection equipment.
- Make offsets and program adjustments to control tool diameter, geometry, concentricity, surface finish, and overall quality.
- Identify and correct grinding problems such as burning, chipping, poor finish, excessive runout, wheel wear, or incorrect tool geometry.
- Monitor automated production and maintain stable, repeatable results during extended production runs.
- Complete setup sheets, inspection records, production documentation, and other required paperwork accurately.
- Perform routine machine cleaning and preventive-maintenance tasks, including monitoring coolant condition and grinding-wheel wear.
- Follow all company safety, quality, and housekeeping requirements.
- Work closely with engineering, quality, and production personnel to improve tool performance, cycle time, and process reliability.
Required Qualifications
- At least 2 years of CNC tool-and-cutter grinding experience, or an equivalent combination of training and hands-on experience.
- Hands-on experience with SAACKE/TTB grinding equipment is strongly preferred. Comparable experience with ANCA, Walter, Rollomatic, Schütte, or similar CNC tool grinders may also be considered.
- Demonstrated ability to perform machine setups and produce acceptable tools with limited supervision.
- Working knowledge of cutting-tool geometry and grinding processes for carbide and high-speed-steel tools.
- Ability to read technical drawings and use precision measuring and optical inspection equipment.
- Ability to recognize tool defects and independently make corrections.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work consistently within micron-level or similarly tight tolerances.
- Basic computer skills and the ability to enter, edit, or manage CNC grinding programs.
- Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively as part of a manufacturing team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience programming SAACKE/TTB machines and associated tool-design or grinding software.
- Experience with automatic loaders, probing systems, wheel-measurement systems, or unattended production.
- Experience producing micro-tools, special form tools, or complex multi-feature cutting tools.
- Experience working in an ISO 9001 or AS9100 manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing, process improvement, and setup-time reduction.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and move throughout the work area for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to use hand tools, measuring equipment, and machine controls safely and accurately.
- Sufficient vision, with or without correction, to inspect small precision features and identify defects.
