Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium has a hiring preference for qualified Alaska Native and American Indian applicants pursuant to P.L. 93-638 Indian Self Determination Act.

Summary:

Under general direction provides pathology services for Alaska Native Medical Center.

Responsibilities:

Assure proper specimen collection and submission prior to accessioning. Assist clinicians with specimen collection questions.

Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and/or verification of unique patient identifiers.

Obtain and review pertinent clinical information and history, including imaging studies, laboratory results, and operative records.

Perform the macroscopic description and dissection of all surgical specimens ranging from simple to complex cases including pertinent macroscopic information for the staging of complex cancer cases.

Preparations necessary for human post-mortem examination.

Prepares tissue for frozen section for pathologist, not diagnosing, and other intra-operative consultation, within established protocol and procedural parameters.

Participates in specimen storage and disposal, and the maintenance of reagents and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

Knowledge of Alaska Tribal Health System, ANTHC, and Alaska Native culture(s) and politics.

Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.

Knowledge of accession, dissection, anatomical description, and histological sampling methods and techniques.
Knowledge of pathology procedures, protocols, and techniques.
Knowledge of procedures, regulations, and standards for the acquisition of human tissue samples.
Knowledge of quality standards and requirements for pathology specimen photographs.
Knowledge of biological specimen disposition, maintenance and storage procedures and techniques.
Knowledge of chemical reagents and equipment used in pathology.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in managing multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meeting deadlines.

Skill in maintaining record keeping

Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.
Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of applications.
Ability to perform frozen sections and other intra-operative consultations.
Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Master’s degree as a Pathology Assistant and board certified/eligible. Progressively responsible professional/exempt work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Non-supervisory - At least(one) 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

Current certification from the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistant or the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Depending on the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain additional certifications or training in one or more specialty areas.
