Full Job Description

Job Description: The Out of Home Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides direct care to all clients, otherwise known as “Riser,” with intellectual and developmental disabilities for Day Habilitation and Supported Living services.

SCLs team DSPs working in their role as Supported Employment Specialists are instrumental in facilitating career development for our Risers. Risers often encounter employment obstacles; the DSP Employment Specialist assists them in obtaining the necessary work support so they can thrive in their work environment. It is the role of the DSP to provide continual guidance, training, and advocacy for the Riser to break down workplace barriers, promote an inclusive work environment, and empower each Riser to reach their full potential.

SCL DSPs support our clients to enhance their self-sufficiency in the areas of personal independence, community integration, and productivity during Day Habilitation. They work to establish relationships with our clients to learn their differences in ability, personality, interests, learning, motivation, and likes and dislikes.

Our Out-of-home DSPs engage clients to work on their personal goals listed in their Support Plan while prioritizing their health and safety while out in the community. They must foster a positive, professional relationship that positively influences client behavior while simultaneously assessing and providing skills to assist clients so that they integrate into their larger community. Additional duties may include participation in training, teaching life skills, facilitating enrichment activities, assisting client budgeting, and assisting clients in conducting business affairs.

This position requires clear communication skills to ensure that all Riser needs, issues, and activities are understood by the Staff throughout all shifts. Out-of-home DSPs must learn to read and understand their Riser’s behaviors and to understand what follow-on actions are required.

Out-of-Home DSPs report to the Program Administrator. This position requires an intrinsically motivated person who works collaboratively with a varying degree of independence. DSPs are an integral position that actively supports our clients in pursuing their Support Plan goals related to employment, community activities, social interactions, essential life skills, and support while conducting business affairs.

Responsibilities and Job Duties:

Provides direct care to clients:
Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs), as defined by AS 47.33.990.
Enrichment activities
Teaching and coaching essential life skills
Community Engagement Activities
Supported Employment Coaching
Monitor and document clients’ progress in their Day Habilitation, Supported Living and Supported Employment Goals within their Therap ISP Data.
Contribute to the ongoing planning of services including the preparation of a service schedule and adjusting their goals as necessary to address any challenges or changes.
Assist with planning, scheduling, and implementation of training programs specific to each participant and tailored to their individual Support Plan.
Implement services that are built around the participant’s wants and needs, are culturally and age-appropriate, and aim toward maximizing community participation and inclusion.
Monitor and document participant Support Plan, behavioral patterns, and health needs in Therap.
Protect, advocate for, and ensure all rights of participants participating in SCL programs.
Assist with personal hygiene, as needed, by the participants to include but not limited to toileting, hand washing, and changing.
Provide transportation to and from planned Supported Living, and Day Habilitation activities.
Assist participants in planning financial goals to include the preparation of budgets, collecting financial records, and personal cash as required by SCL policy.
Create Purchase requests for activities, equipment, and supplies by program requirements.
Coordinate program activities with SCL administrator and Senior In-Home DSP as needed.
Maintain up-to-date familiarity with state laws, regulations, and legislation to assure compliance.
Assist with meal activities, as required, to ensure adequate nutritional needs are being met for the participant during services.
Maintain professional working relationships with participants, co-workers, and key personnel.
Develop and maintain a positive, supportive rapport with clients, guardians, and client planning team.
Complete participant digital records, documentation, and reports per SCL Policy and Procedures as required by local, state, and federal regulations.
Attend training seminars, in-service training, and staff meetings. Participate as required, in the development and implementation of training etc.
Responsible for maintaining training compliance per SCL policies and procedures, and state and federal regulations.
Accurately document services rendered to clients via Therap.
Actively communicates with clients, Program Administrator, clients, and fellow staff members.
Gains familiarity with the client’s Support Plan and utilizes it to guide each client’s individual needs and goals for activities while out in the community.
Manage client medical emergencies, as needed.
Attend required continuing education training as required
Provides other support services and duties as necessary
Flexible schedule available. Work hours must fall between 8:00 AM and 6:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required.
Experience working with individuals with disabilities in residential or day habilitation settings preferred.
CPR and First Aid certifications (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Ability to lift and support individuals as needed, with or without accommodations.
