JOB SUMMARY:

The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day accounting operations of St. Mary’s Native Corporation and its subsidiaries. This role performs general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and financial reporting support to ensure accurate and timely financial information.

The Staff Accountant plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of the accounting records and supporting the monthly close process. This position will work across multiple entities and may support job costing, government contracting requirements, and other financial reporting needs.

This is a hands-on role in a growing accounting environment. The Staff Accountant will assist in improving processes, correcting discrepancies, and helping establish consistent and reliable accounting practices. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and adaptable, with a willingness to learn and contribute in an environment where processes are still being refined. The role also requires flexibility and a team-oriented mindset, including the willingness to step in and support transactional accounting functions such as accounts payable and payroll when needed to ensure continuity of operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Staff Accountant prepares and posts journal entries, ensuring that transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. This includes supporting accruals, reclassifications, and other adjusting entries as part of the monthly close process.

The position performs account reconciliations, including bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, intercompany accounts, and other key accounts. The Staff Accountant investigates discrepancies, resolves issues, and ensures that reconciliations are completed in a timely and accurate manner.

The Staff Accountant supports the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes by preparing schedules, gathering supporting documentation, and assisting the Controller in producing financial statements.

The role assists with accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processes as needed, helping ensure transactions are properly recorded, coded, and processed accurately across entities.

The Staff Accountant is expected to step in and provide direct support in transactional areas, including accounts payable and payroll, when workload demands, staffing constraints, or process gaps require additional support. This includes reviewing invoices, assisting with payment processing, supporting payroll reviews, and helping ensure continuity and timeliness of critical accounting functions.

The Staff Accountant supports multi-entity accounting by maintaining accurate records for subsidiaries and assisting with intercompany transactions and reconciliations. This includes ensuring that intercompany balances are properly recorded and resolved in a timely manner.

The position may assist with job cost accounting by ensuring that expenses are coded correctly to projects and contracts, supporting accurate cost tracking and reporting.

The Staff Accountant supports audit and tax preparation by organizing schedules, gathering documentation, and responding to requests from auditors and external accountants.

The Staff Accountant works with accounting systems, including Sage Intacct, to enter, review, and report financial data, and helps ensure data accuracy and consistency.

The position collaborates with accounting team members and other departments to ensure financial information is accurate, complete, and aligned with operational activity.

The Staff Accountant may perform other duties as assigned to support the accounting department and organizational goals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor’s degree in accounting. Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience may be considered.

The candidate should have at least two to four years of accounting experience, including experience with general ledger accounting, journal entries, and account reconciliations.

A basic understanding of generally accepted accounting principles is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working in a multi-entity or subsidiary-based environment is preferred.

Experience with government contracting or job costing is beneficial.

Experience with Sage Intacct or similar accounting systems is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

The Staff Accountant must have strong attention to detail and the ability to work accurately with financial data.

This role requires good organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a structured and timely manner.

The candidate should have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify discrepancies and resolve issues effectively.

The Staff Accountant must be able to communicate clearly and work collaboratively with team members and other departments.

Basic to intermediate Excel skills are required, including the ability to work with spreadsheets, formulas, and data analysis.

The ideal candidate must be adaptable and willing to work in an environment where processes are evolving and improvements are ongoing.

The candidate should demonstrate initiative, reliability, and a willingness to learn and grow within the organization.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting with a wide variety of people with differing functions, personalities, and abilities.
