Position Summary
The Tax Manager is responsible for leading the firm's tax department while serving as a trusted advisor to our clients. This individual manages the tax team, oversees tax workflow, reviews complex tax returns, and provides proactive tax planning that helps clients make confident business decisions.
This is a highly collaborative, client-facing leadership role requiring strong technical tax expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to mentor and develop team members.
Key Responsibilities: Client Leadership & Advisory
- Serve as the primary tax advisor for a portfolio of business and individual clients.
- Build long-term client relationships through proactive communication and exceptional service.
- Lead tax planning meetings and identify opportunities to reduce tax liabilities and improve profitability.
- Explain complex tax concepts in a clear, confident, and client-friendly manner.
- Respond to client questions with professionalism and urgency.
Tax Department Leadership
- Manage, mentor, and develop the firm's tax team, providing coaching, feedback, and technical guidance.
- Review tax returns prepared by staff to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
- Oversee departmental workflow to ensure deadlines are met during tax season and throughout the year.
- Maintain quality control standards across all tax engagements.
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, training, and performance management of tax team members.
Technical Tax Responsibilities
- Review and prepare complex business and individual tax returns.
- Oversee corporate, partnership, S-Corporation, trust, nonprofit, and individual tax filings as applicable.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations.
- Oversee multi-state tax filings and sales tax compliance when applicable.
- Stay current on changing tax laws and communicate relevant updates to both clients and staff.
Operational Leadership
- Identify opportunities to improve tax department processes, workflows, and efficiencies.
- Collaborate with firm leadership on capacity planning, resource allocation, and department growth.
- Support profitability goals by managing realization, workflow, and client satisfaction.
- Maintain documentation and internal procedures that promote consistency and scalability.
Qualifications
- CPA license or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation required (CPA preferred).
- 5+ years of accounting tax experience.
- Previous experience supervising or managing a tax team.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state taxation for businesses and individuals.
- Experience with tax planning and advisory services.
- Strong client relationship management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with tax preparation software and cloud-based accounting systems.
- Ability to work within Eastern Time business hours.
