The incumbent of this position serves as Superintendent of the Andersonville National Historic Site, with responsibility for overseeing the preservation, interpretation, maintenance, administration, and development of the park, and the safety and well-being of staff, volunteers, and visitors of the park.
Provides leadership in the development of policies, standards, and procedures which govern the professional conduct of work related to the administration and implementation of the park's programs, including the functional areas of public use management, resource stewardship, education and interpretation, fiscal and human resources management, park maintenance, visitor services, safety management, park partnerships, public affairs, budget planning and execution, and park development.
Andersonville National Historic Site comprises three distinct components: the former site of the Camp Sumter military prison, the Andersonville National Cemetery, and the National Prisoner of War Museum, which opened in 1998 to honor all U.S. prisoners of war in all wars. In all, the park maintains a total of approximately 515 acres - 481 acres owned by the Federal government and 34 acres of non-Federal land managed by the park. Visitor use is distributed year-round with the largest numbers in the spring, fall, and summer, followed by winter.
Physical Demands: Most of the work is performed indoors in an office setting. There may be some extended walking through facilities and carrying of light items such as files, manuals, and government property. Mentally stressful and taxing situations are present at times. Travel to other areas is occasionally required. A valid driver's license is required.
Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in an office setting. However, some work is also performed outdoors in various types of weather and terrain.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you may be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. To qualify for this position at the GS-13 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work.
You must include hours per week worked.
Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to:
- Supervisory oversight of employees responsible for protection, administration, facility maintenance and operations, and visitor service duties;
- Administrative program oversight and accountability;
- Law enforcement or investigative work;
- Natural or cultural preservation management;
- Community partnership facilitation;
- Communication and public trust duties;
- Project management and team accountability;
- Forestry and/or fire management;
- Program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations;
- and/or similar work.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
This position does not allow substituting education for experience.
