Neighborhood Inspection is a division of the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD). Its mission is to preserve Wichita’s neighborhoods and to make Wichita a cleaner City through fair, cost-effective and efficiently processed code enforcement activities. A Neighborhood Inspector specializes in enforcing and securing compliance with residential nuisance, zoning and minimum housing codes. Operating in a complaint-based, case management environment, the work requires strong attention to detail, the ability to communicate with tact and firmness (both verbally and in writing) and strong organization and time-management skills. Inspectors interact with the public, law enforcement, the court system and management every day. The working environment is a blend of inspections/field work and in-office work. Existing technical skills are a must-have. Opportunities for income advancement are available through job experience (longevity) along with additional testing and certifications. The days and hours for this position: Monday-Friday: 7:30am - 4:30pm
The salary range for this position is between $22.72 - $34.42 (ranging between class specification 622-627). The exact salary will be determined at the time of hire.

High School Diploma or GED

One (1) year of experience in public contact work particularly in dealing with difficult or disgruntled individuals demonstrating high levels of patience and conflict resolution skills.

One (1) year of experience to document and report findings accurately, including narratives.

One (1) year of experience using excellent organizational and time-management skills by handling multiple projects efficiently.

Must successfully pass the Housing Code Enforcement Test within the first six months of hire and departmental Zoning Level 1 test within the first year.

A valid driver's license.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Attainment of passing scores on pre-employment tests. Candidates with required experience and training will be required to take the following assessments:

Preferred Experience and Training
Three (3) years of experience in code enforcement or inspection roles.
One (1) year of experience in public contact roles within law enforcement, court systems, or traffic departments.

Familiarity with residential nuisance, zoning, and minimum housing codes.

Familiarity with case management in a complaint-based environment.

ICC Zoning Inspector Certification.

ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector Certification.

ICC Certification in one of the following:

Residential Building Inspector

Residential Plumbing Inspector

Residential Mechanical Inspector

Residential Electrical Inspector
Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening. Must also pass a KBI background investigation.
Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
