Sales Director, Magnetic Materials

Location: Detroit, MI
Reports To: President, Magnetic Materials
FLSA Status: Exempt
Travel: 40–50%

Salary & Benefits

Base Salary: $175,000–$200,000
Annual Bonus: Target 40% (paid annually)
Car Allowance: $800/month
Comprehensive benefits package

Position Summary

Company is seeking an experienced Sales Director, Magnetic Materials to lead its North American commercial organization. This executive-level leadership role will be responsible for developing and executing the regional commercial strategy, leading the North American sales team, expanding strategic customer relationships, and driving profitable growth across the automotive, EV, industrial, and emerging technology markets.

The successful candidate will combine strong commercial leadership with technical expertise in magnetic materials or related technologies while partnering with engineering, operations, and global business units to support long-term business growth.

Essential Responsibilities

Commercial Leadership

Develop and execute the North American commercial strategy for the Magnetic Materials business.
Lead, coach, mentor, and develop the North American Magnetics commercial team.
Establish team objectives, performance expectations, and professional development plans.
Build a high-performance, customer-focused commercial organization.
Ensure alignment between North American activities and global business strategy.

Strategic Account Management

Own and grow strategic accounts within the automotive, EV, and industrial sectors, focusing on long-term revenue growth and market penetration.
Develop and execute multi-year account strategies, including business planning, forecasting, and portfolio expansion.
Lead executive-level customer negotiations, pricing strategy, and commercial agreements.
Manage complex, multi-million-dollar customer relationships.

Business Development

Identify and drive new business opportunities involving permanent magnet electric motors and related applications.
Expand business within automotive OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, industrial manufacturers, and emerging technology markets.
Represent Company at customer sites, industry conferences, and trade shows.

Technical & Cross-Functional Leadership

Serve as a trusted technical advisor by translating magnetic material capabilities into practical customer solutions.
Partner with Engineering and R&D to align product development with customer requirements and future market needs.
Coordinate closely with global teams, including Japan and other subsidiaries, to align product strategy, pricing, and delivery.
Foster collaboration across Sales, Sales Support, Engineering, Global Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and Global Business Units.
Support resolution of complex customer issues related to quality, performance, and delivery while serving as the commercial escalation point.

Market & Business Planning

Analyze market dynamics, competitive activity, technology trends, and customer roadmaps to drive strategic decisions.
Lead forecasting accuracy, pipeline development, and CRM management (HubSpot preferred).
Utilize business analytics to support product lifecycle planning, pricing strategy, and long-term growth initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong understanding of magnetic materials (Neodymium, Ferrite, etc.) and their applications, or closely related technologies including electric motors, sensors, motion control, and automotive electrification.
Knowledge of automotive electrification, EV systems, robotics, and motor design principles.
Ability to communicate effectively with engineering, procurement, manufacturing, operations, and executive leadership regarding technical products and commercial opportunities.
Proven experience leading, coaching, mentoring, and developing high-performing commercial organizations.
Demonstrated success managing complex, multi-million-dollar strategic accounts.
Strong business acumen including ROI analysis, forecasting, pricing strategy, and product lifecycle management.
Exceptional communication, negotiation, presentation, and executive relationship-building skills.
Ability to lead cross-functional teams within a global, matrixed organization.
Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
Experience utilizing CRM systems (HubSpot preferred).

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Business, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
15+ years of experience in technical sales, business development, strategic account management, or commercial leadership.
5+ years of experience leading customer-facing commercial organizations or sales teams.
Proven experience within magnetic materials, advanced materials, or related industrial manufacturing sectors.
Strong background supporting Automotive OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, or industrial manufacturing customers.
Experience working within a cross-cultural, global business environment.

Preferred Industry Experience

Experience in one or more of the following is highly desirable:
