The Provost of the U.S. Naval Academy invites applications for the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) to begin as early as December 2026. The CTL Director reports to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and directly supports the Naval Academy mission by advancing the best practices in undergraduate teaching among the military and civilian faculty. This position is not currently expected to have supervisory responsibilities. By developing and overseeing specialized workshops for faculty, the Director drives advancement in pedagogical strategy and instructional innovation.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Provides comprehensive support to both civilian and military faculty in developing high-impact academic instruction, ensuring the delivery of a world-class learning experience for military students.
- Organizes and facilitates faculty teaching workshops focused on modern pedagogy, innovative instructional tools, and classroom management.
- Collaborates on collection of instructional feedback and evaluation of academic courses, including student and peer evaluation of instruction.
- Manages a program of mid-semester student feedback conducted by and for instructors across all disciplines.
- Disseminates current research on the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and supports faculty engaged in SoTL.
This is an onsite, 12-month compensation model, excepted service federal faculty position with a 3-year renewable appointment, a highly competitive salary, and full federal benefits. The ability to fill this position is contingent upon the availability of funding.
Salary Details:
- Pay Band: AD-09 - Classification 13
- Approximate Starting Salary Range: $115,000 – $135,000 annually
- Based on 12-month compensation model

Required Minimum Qualifications:
- A Master’s Degree or higher in a field related to teaching and learning or another discipline represented in the USNA curriculum.
- A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in a higher education setting.
Preferred Qualifications (We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience or demonstrated interest in some or all of the following areas):
- A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in academia with a focus on teaching pedagogy, curriculum development, and faculty development in a higher education setting.
- A PhD in a field related to teaching and learning or another discipline represented in the USNA curriculum.
- Comprehensive knowledge of teaching and learning pedagogy to include experience teaching and/or developing online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses in higher education, with knowledge of various instructional design models.
- Proven ability to manage and administer programs that support faculty teaching development to include developing, implementing, and assessing teaching and learning programs, policies, and procedures.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including the ability to conduct development sessions and workshops for faculty; to provide briefings, detailed reports,and effective web-based communications; and to maintain effective partnerships with civilian and military faculty, staff, and leadership.
- Demonstrated experience with learning management systems and a wide range of instructional and educational technologies that support teaching excellence and student learning.
- Working knowledge of military/federal education systems, protocols, and the unique challenges and opportunities associated with education for military officers.
- Experience exploring generative AI’s potential roles and implications for learning in higher education.
- Experience in managing and stewarding funds associated with educational programs.
- Proficiency in using standard office software and experience with academic database systems and maintaining professional program websites.
