The United States Naval Academy is seeking a collaborative, thoughtful, strategic leader to lead the Research & Instruction Department at Nimitz Library. The successful candidate will lead and manage the Research & Instruction department within Nimitz Library. The department provides research support to midshipmen, faculty, and staff through a combination of tailored classroom instruction, one-on-one consultations, and online resources. The successful candidate will support a forward-looking library offering information services at a premier undergraduate institution. This position reports to the Associate Library Director for User Services.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Leading, supervising, and evaluating librarians in the Research & Instruction Department in alignment with Library and institutional policies and priorities.
- Demonstrating leadership and expertise by providing high-quality research support services as evidenced by staffing the research help desk, teaching information literacy sessions, holding individual research consultations, providing research support tailored to meet the needs of faculty, and creating resources for asynchronous research support.
- Advocating for the needs of the department and Library.
- Facilitating collaboration and communication among various library and Academy departments to support the Library’s mission, vision, and goals.
- Serving as library subject specialist for midshipmen and faculty in one or more subject areas.
- Overseeing the planning, execution, and assessment of information literacy and research support services.
- Keeping current of developments in the academic library field in order to contribute to planning and decision making regarding the Library’s functions and services.
- Evaluating and maintaining the Library’s collections, both physical and electronic, for currency and relevance to the curriculum and to faculty research needs in assigned subject areas.
- Formulating and revising policies and procedures related to the work of the Research & Instruction Department.
This is a full-time, onsite, supervisory excepted service federal position with a 12-month compensation model. The initial appointment is for approximately three years, with the anticipation of renewal, a highly competitive salary, and a full federal benefits package
Salary Details:
- Pay Band: AD-01 - Classification 12
- Approximate Starting Salary Range: $95,000 – $105,000 annually
- Based on 12-month compensation model

Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in library and/or information sciences; or a graduate degree in a related field with a minimum of 3 years of library experience.
- Required to be completed prior to start of position.
Preferred Qualifications (We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience or demonstrated interest in some or all of the following areas):
- A proven, user-centered public service philosophy;
- A track record of supervisory, project management, or team leadership experience, including leading planning, assessment, and implementation phases;
- Experience—preferably in a leadership capacity—delivering and evolving core library services, including research help, information literacy instruction, collection management, and subject specialist liaison operations;
- Direct experience using library data and analytics to evaluate services, measure outcomes, and make evidence-based decisions regarding staffing, hours, or resource allocation;
- Demonstrated commitment to maintaining a broad awareness of trends in libraries and higher education to inform library functions and services; and
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to effectively collaborate with faculty, students, and library staff.
