Job Summary
Learning Designs Learning Services is seeking an experienced and versatile Elementary Reading & Math Interventionist to provide individualized, in-person academic support to students in Minneapolis and the southwest Twin Cities metro.
We are looking for a well-rounded educator who is confident teaching both reading and elementary math and understands that students with learning differences often need instruction that is explicit, individualized, encouraging, and responsive to their needs.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the Science of Reading and structured literacy, with training or experience in approaches such as Orton-Gillingham, Barton, Wilson, UFLI, LETRS, or similar evidence-based methods. Candidates should also be comfortable providing math instruction and intervention through approximately the 5th-grade level.
Current opportunities include approximately 2–4 hours per week with students in Edina, with the opportunity to build a larger caseload serving additional Learning Designs students throughout Minneapolis and the southwest metro.
This is a part-time, independent contractor position paying $45–$50 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
Duties
- Provide individualized, one-to-one reading and math instruction to elementary-age students.
- Deliver explicit, systematic reading instruction aligned with the Science of Reading and structured-literacy principles.
- Support skills including phonemic awareness, decoding, encoding/spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension as appropriate for each student.
- Provide elementary math instruction and intervention through approximately 5th-grade skills, including number sense, fact fluency, computation, fractions, problem solving, and conceptual understanding.
- Identify gaps in foundational skills and adjust instruction based on student performance and progress.
- Support students with ADHD, dyslexia, executive-functioning challenges, and other learning differences.
- Incorporate strategies for attention, organization, working memory, task initiation, and perseverance when these interfere with learning.
- Build positive, encouraging relationships with students and help them develop confidence and greater independence.
- Communicate professionally with parents and Learning Designs regarding scheduling, progress, concerns, and instructional needs.
- Maintain consistent scheduling and reliable attendance with assigned students.
- Travel to students for in-person sessions in Minneapolis, Edina, and surrounding southwest metro communities.
Skills & Qualifications Needed
- Bachelor's degree required; degree in elementary education, special education, literacy, or a related field strongly preferred.
- Professional teaching, tutoring, or academic-intervention experience with elementary-age students.
- Strong understanding of Science of Reading and structured literacy.
- Training or experience with Orton-Gillingham, Barton, Wilson, UFLI, LETRS, or another evidence-based structured-literacy approach strongly preferred.
- Ability to confidently teach and remediate elementary mathematics through approximately 5th grade.
- Ability to recognize underlying skill gaps rather than simply help students complete homework.
- Experience supporting students with dyslexia, ADHD, executive-functioning challenges, or other learning differences preferred.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and explain concepts in multiple ways.
- Excellent relationship-building skills and a patient, encouraging approach to students who may have experienced academic frustration.
- Strong communication, organization, and reliability.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with Learning Designs and students' families.
- Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to students throughout Minneapolis and the southwest metro.
- Availability during after-school hours.
