Dog Handler - Level 1

Pay: $15.50/hr (Level 1) | Advancement to Level 2 ($16.50/hr) and Level 3 ($17.50/hr) based on performance
About the Role
Dog Handlers are at the heart of Como Pet Lodge & Animal Works' daily operations. They oversee playgroups, manage feeding schedules, administer medications, and monitor dogs closely for behavioral changes. This role reports to the Kennel Supervisor and requires clear communication, dog experience, and the ability to work actively outdoors.
We are currently hiring for two part-time positions.
Shifts:
- AM: 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM
- MID: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
- PM: 12:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Employment Type: Part-time
Minimum Age: 18+
Probationary Period: 90 days
Responsibilities
- Supervise playgroups and monitor dogs for behavioral changes
- Open and close the yards
- Manage feeding schedules and administer medications as directed
- Maintain general cleanliness and assist with kennel technician duties as needed
- Communicate daily operations clearly with the Kennel Supervisor
- Interact with clients to represent our mission and values
Requirements
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs
- Ability to bend, kneel, stand for long periods, and walk long distances throughout a shift
- Strong ability to retain focus in a dynamic, loud environment (regular exposure to barking)
- Ability to work outdoors for the majority of a shift, including summer months with temperatures reaching 110°F+
- Holiday availability required (our busy season falls during holidays)
- Cleaning experience required
- Closed-toed footwear required; appropriate attire for sun protection required
- Strong interpersonal skills and customer service experience
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Basic knowledge of dog behavior and body language preferred; no hands-on experience required for this entry-level position
Work Environment
Como Pet Lodge & Animal Works sits on a 4-acre property near open range and foothills. Direct animal contact carries an inherent risk of bites and scratches. Employees should also expect regular exposure to local wildlife.
